Another update from the greatest country!

I hope y'all know I have bo preference for any country and I am merely jesting xD

We have now seen two instances of an awesome feature of the didi. Weird behaviour detection and automatic failover!

If your driver decides bot to show up, or if something else goes wrong making your driver decide to flake on you, the app will detect that a meetup between driver and passenger is not happening and fetch you a new driver automatically! The second instance of this was when trying to reach the railway station.

Now we are on a local train that only goes up to 250 km/h, instead of one of the big one that goes up to 350 km/h. We had that faster model on our way to hong kong.

Speaking of hong kong, it really isn't that good of a city, they speak cantonese (20 extra syllables to learn, and they use traditional chinese script). They do speak more English, but besides their bright youth, most adults just seem to be grumpy.

Must've been my face, or maybe my wife's xD

Either way, we're long back in China mainland, happily chugging along at 200 km/h towards our second to last hotel in the middle of nowhere!

But yes, the tech! We just left yangshuo (no, that is not speaking sheep, but my Chinese ain't good enough to tell you what it does mean). You can get a fully electric scooter with an effective travel distance of around 40 kilometers. We rented three of them in succession, taking them north, east, and west respectively. The sights!

But yes, it's fully electric and it is almost as popular here as it is said to be in Thailand (I've never been there). I was telling my wife that I should probably get one back home for travel to the office... Maybe a good way to avoid traffic jams.

Another weird tech thing is their instant food tech. Attached you will find a picture of an instant rice dish cooked on a heat packet. All in one box, while enjoying (?) this train ride of over 7 hours.

I think that is all for the tech marvels. Some tech is actually imported. The rope bridge we walked was French, some of the elevator tech is from the Nordics (Kone, of course) and the pop culture is from Finland and Japan.

We did find a store that sells the official dark souls art books, as well as the sekiro and elden ring ones. Right along with ghibli and vocaloid merch :)

They're a little behind in anime merch they offer, but I'm a sucker for detective Conan, so I'm not compaining about them being 5-10 years behind and offering conan and magic Kaito merch at all!

See y'all in the next one :)

Oh, so for health-wise Hong Kong was the worst, only place I had stomach issues... Also the only place I saw roaches. They were huge! How do people deal with these? D:

The futility of Ad-Blockers

Ads are filling the entirety of the Web -- websites, podcasts, YouTube videos, etc. -- at an increasing rate. Prices for those ad placements are plummeting. Consumers are desperate to use ad-blockers to make the web palatable. Google (and others) are desperate to break and block ad-blockers. All of which results in... more ads and lower pay for creators.

It's a fascinatingly annoying cycle. And there's only one viable way out of it.

openSUSE says "No Lunduke allowed!"

Those in power with openSUSE make it clear they will not allow me anywhere near anything related to the openSUSE project. Ever. For any reason.

Well, that settles that, then! Guess I won't be contributing to openSUSE! 🤣

"Andreas Kling creator of Serenity OS & Ladybird Web Browser" - Lunduke’s Big Tech Show - September 13th, 2023 - Ep 044

Quick thought before I get to work: I should use VMs more.

  • @Greg_Gauthier suggested using one to run the Hercules mainframe emulator on. I couldn't get it working on my Linux Mint laptop, but apparently stock Debian can do it just fine.
  • @gginorio and others were saying VMs make it harder for browsers (and hackers) to fingerprint your system. I'm all for more security.
  • If the mainframe thing works - and especially if I can connect to it from a different VM (which I doubt is possible but u never know) - then I could also use a VM for my web dev projects (cuz my MySQL/MariaDB is also borked on my laptop, currently using a Raspberry Pi).
  • I've often had this idea of taking a Raspberry Pi, putting something crazy-light like TinyCore Linux on it, geek-rigging its init scripts and other stuff so that it boots into either an emulator or one of my own creations (like the Penalty Box). Oh, and like I said the other day I want to build a MUD. VMs fit both of those ideas well too.
  • And I've ...

I vaguely recall that this was televised live. It was certainly a major event at the time, to prove the safety of transporting nuclear waste to the public.

But can anyone identify the machine at around 2:00-2:03? I don't recognise it at all... given that it's obviously connected to test equipment, maybe HP?

BASIC News

Well, boys, it happened again. The Kurtz half of Kemeny and Kurtz (the inventors of BASIC), just passed away at 96.
