Quick thought before I get to work: I should use VMs more.

@Greg_Gauthier suggested using one to run the Hercules mainframe emulator on. I couldn't get it working on my Linux Mint laptop, but apparently stock Debian can do it just fine.
@gginorio and others were saying VMs make it harder for browsers (and hackers) to fingerprint your system. I'm all for more security.
If the mainframe thing works - and especially if I can connect to it from a different VM (which I doubt is possible but u never know) - then I could also use a VM for my web dev projects (cuz my MySQL/MariaDB is also borked on my laptop, currently using a Raspberry Pi).
I've often had this idea of taking a Raspberry Pi, putting something crazy-light like TinyCore Linux on it, geek-rigging its init scripts and other stuff so that it boots into either an emulator or one of my own creations (like the Penalty Box). Oh, and like I said the other day I want to build a MUD. VMs fit both of those ideas well too.
And I've just had a lot of fun in VMs. I got my start in Linux that way, setting up VirtualBox back when my laptop ran Windows (gosh, what, 7 years ago?). I've done tons of exploring, and even last nite I got to messing around with ReactOS again (btw I don't recommend ReactOS for web browsing - they could rename Firefox to Prompty McSixClix with all the SSL errors, lol. Their IE-like browser is just as bad. But it was still fun to try and get some new software running on that thing). VMs are fun! And a laptop with a quad-core processor and 16 GB of RAM should be able to run a couple without issue.

Anyway, I'm thinking of moving all my files onto my external hard drive, and starting over. I've been running the same version of Mint for several years now, and I'm thinking maybe a reinstall is in order. I'm sticking with Mint for the host for now, just cuz I know it well (distro-hopping comes after - unironically, in VMs, lol).

But sometimes... VirtualBox sucks ice. I've always had trouble getting things like shared folders, shared clipboard, sometimes sound, etc. working. When config is straightforward, I don't mind, but oh so often it's a mess.

So, it's question time: Once I've got my new Linux Mint host machine set up, which software is my best option if I want to start doing more of my actual computing (browsing, coding, etc.) in VMs?

Upgraded Mint + upgraded VirtualBox sounds good to me!
QEMU! (never used it, but I'm open to learning)

The futility of Ad-Blockers

Ads are filling the entirety of the Web -- websites, podcasts, YouTube videos, etc. -- at an increasing rate. Prices for those ad placements are plummeting. Consumers are desperate to use ad-blockers to make the web palatable. Google (and others) are desperate to break and block ad-blockers. All of which results in... more ads and lower pay for creators.

It's a fascinatingly annoying cycle. And there's only one viable way out of it.

I vaguely recall that this was televised live. It was certainly a major event at the time, to prove the safety of transporting nuclear waste to the public.

But can anyone identify the machine at around 2:00-2:03? I don't recognise it at all... given that it's obviously connected to test equipment, maybe HP?

The casual use of GenAI

I love having GenAI as a productivity booster when writing pretty much anything. I am preparing for a meeting with a client to go over questions about their Snowflake environment. I have my own thoughts of course, but I use GenAI to flesh out anything I might have missed, and to put everything in a logical order with professional wording.

I use my "Executive model"
1. Hire An Expert
2. Give orientation
3. Give specific instructions
4. Micromanage.

Here is an example of the prompt I used to quickly put together my questions for this meeting. And of course I vetted and revised the answer (that's the micromanage part).

Play the role of an advanced snowflake expertise with experience lift and sifting from teradata to Snowflake. You are also an excellent technical educator and consulting mentor.
