I am starting to form an opinion that Internet is at it's best when it's full of forums where people talk about everything. Old phpBB crapships (named so on account of their horrendous user interface, eclipsed only by Local's interface) were ultimately the pinnacle of telecommunication technology, I think. And search engines that indexed them and returned results from them made the world a better place.

I rant because I got interested in trying out a BBS and was wondering about the best software for that. I know you can technically use an ordinary telnet for this, but you'll be missing out on important stuff. So, I used the Locals search to dig through this forum to find the best software. :) This online community proposed the following for my consideration: SyncTerm https://syncterm.bbsdev.net/ Netrunner http://www.mysticbbs.com/downloads.html and Telemate http://www.starbase21.net/telemate.html

There's also some rumblings about emulating a 56k modem. https://lunduke.substack.com/p/connecting-to-telnet-bbses-the-most I'm not sure if I'll do that but it's nice to keep the option in the back of the head. :)

The futility of Ad-Blockers

Ads are filling the entirety of the Web -- websites, podcasts, YouTube videos, etc. -- at an increasing rate. Prices for those ad placements are plummeting. Consumers are desperate to use ad-blockers to make the web palatable. Google (and others) are desperate to break and block ad-blockers. All of which results in... more ads and lower pay for creators.

It's a fascinatingly annoying cycle. And there's only one viable way out of it.

As you may know, the Cosmic desktop is based on the Smithray rust library. Niri is also based on Smithray, but it has a different take on the desktop experience.

Niri is a scrollable-tiling Wayland compositor. Windows are arranged in columns on an infinite strip going to the right. Opening a new window never causes existing windows to resize.

I'd like to announce the release of Niri version 0.1.10. This release features huge improvements to window arrangement and mouse dragging.

Dragging windows into tiling position is now super simple and intuitive. Hold the MOD key and drag away - usually the Windows key. Tablet users will find a similar experience. Just hold and drag. There are videos demonstrating these features.

Other improvements include trackball support, better pointer positioning after dragging, laptop lid opening and closing commands, and much better multi-monitor support.
