GNOME's Shaman Departs as Executive Director after 9 Months on the Job
Her only accomplishment: A "5 Year Plan" of "Diversity"
July 12, 2024
post photo preview

The GNOME Foundation has announced that their Executive Director "will be departing" after only 9 months on the job.

Why the short tenure?

The departing Executive Director, Holly Million, was hired to lead the GNOME Foundation in October of 2023 -- leaving behind her career as a "Professional Shaman" and producer of flavored "Shaman Water".  During her 9 month tenure at the helm, she guided GNOME down a path of continued financial ruin, and avoided any interaction with Tech Journalists.

Million's only known accomplishment, as Executive Director, is the creation of a "GNOME 5 Year Strategic Plan" consisting primarily of "Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion" and the goal of, eventually, producing... a PowerPoint Presentation.

The new interim Executive Director, Richard Littauer, will be transitioned into the role over the remainder of the month of July.

“I’m very proud of what I have accomplished in my time with GNOME," stated Holly Million, "and I am dedicated to working with Richard through a transition to ensure that everything I have been working on is handed off smoothly. I will be pursuing a PhD in Psychology and dedicating myself to my own private practice."

The wording of the entire announcement avoids stating who decided on this course of action.

Why, exactly, is Holly Million leaving the role?  Was she fired for her, well documented, poor performance?  Did she choose to leave?  Considering the short notice -- just over 2 weeks for a transition to the new Executive Director -- coupled with the recent praise which Million received from the GNOME Foundation Board... that would suggest this was not a long-planned departure.

The Future of GNOME Foundation

Being as Richard Littauer will be the interim Executive Director... who will fill that role permanently?  According to the announcement:

"The Board will be meeting next week to set up a search plan for a permanent Executive Director, which will be announced after GUADEC (July 19th - 24th, 2024)."

Whoever the new Executive Director ends up being, that person will inherit a foundation in dire financial circumstances, with no viable plan to return to profitability.  And, even though GNOME may be a "non-profit" foundation... losing money regularly is simply not sustainable.

Did the GNOME Foundation learn a lesson from the folly of the outgoing Executive Director?  Will they select a new Director who will be better equipped to return the GNOME Foundation to profitability and sustainability?

We will soon find out.

Inclusivity Activists are Destroying Open Source

Left Wing Extremists call people "Nazis", rip Open Source apart, in name of "Inclusivity".

WARNING: This is going to get very political. But it needs to. There's simply no other way to talk about this critical topic which is directly impacting Free and Open Source Software in a real, practical way.

The futility of Ad-Blockers

Ads are filling the entirety of the Web -- websites, podcasts, YouTube videos, etc. -- at an increasing rate. Prices for those ad placements are plummeting. Consumers are desperate to use ad-blockers to make the web palatable. Google (and others) are desperate to break and block ad-blockers. All of which results in... more ads and lower pay for creators.

It's a fascinatingly annoying cycle. And there's only one viable way out of it.

Data privacy is nearly impossible these days.

We don't have private data

Our public and private personas are completely mixed and available to data brokers. If we want to have a truly private persona that is totally separate from our public persona, this will require a separate device. Consider a Linux or BSD-powered laptop, tablet, or a de-Googled phone. The spyware built into our mobile devices is far too pervasive to avoid - even when our device is offline.

The journey away from big tech will be hard

The best way to protest this data collection is to vote with our wallet. We must deny them our private data, stop using their products, and stop paying them. Unfortunately, moving away from big tech is not easy. It is not like it used to be ... but it can be done.

If we want to begin to move away from big tech, we must first admit that it took years to get sucked into their products. It will take a long time to move away. Patience and discipline are required to break the addiction or leave ...

This letter to the editor from the December 1994 issue of Byte didn't age well.

IBM gets sued (again). iPad App Dev says no to AI. Linux desktop hits 56 Million.

Another week, another lawsuit against IBM.  I've been saying that the legal action was coming... and, boy howdy, is it ever!

Plus: Major iOS App developer takes a firm stance against A.I. features, and The Lunduke Journal crunches the numbers and determines that there are roughly 56 Million desktop PCs running Linux.  Give or take.

Remember when "GIMP" was declared an offensive name, and it was forked?  What ever happened to that?
How The Lunduke Journal killed a “Woke Fork” by uttering two words.

Back in 2019, someone decided that the name of the most popular image editing software on Linux ("The GIMP" -- an acronym of "GNU Image Manipulation Program") was too offensive.  And, therefor, "The GIMP" must be forked and renamed in order to save us all from seeing the word.

What ever happened to that new "Not The GIMP" project?  What was the fate of a project created entirely for political naming purposes?

The short version: It's dead.  And, apparently, The Lunduke Journal is responsible.

Birth of The "Glimpse" Project

On July 6th, 2019, The Glimpse Project was created -- as a protest over the word "GIMP" being offensive and "problematic" to some people.

From the project announcement:

“If English is not your first language, then you may not have realised that the word “gimp” is problematic. In some countries it is considered a slur against disabled people and a playground insult directed at unpopular children. It can also be linked to certain “after dark” activities performed by consenting adults.”

News of the creation of this "Definitely Not GIMP" project was covered all across the Linux and Open Source world -- articles, podcasts, and YouTube videos all talked about this "Woke Fork" of The GIMP.  It was the talk of the town.  (Even The Lunduke Journal covered the project back in 2019.)

With all of this attention, surely the "Glimpse" Image Editor would have a bright future, right?

Well.  Not quite.

Death of The "Glimpse" Project

By early 2021, this new "Not GIMP" project was abandoned.

The website was shut down.  Their Patreon account closed.  Twitter account deleted.

But... why?

Why did "Glimpse", ultimately, fail?

  • Was it because it was based on nothing more than rebranding an already popular piece of software?
  • Was it because it didn't actually provide anything new and compelling?
  • Was it because the "Woke" ideology which, clearly, motivated the creation of this project was fundamentally off-putting to the vast majority of users and developers?

According to the leader of the "Not At All GIMP" fork, Bobby Moss, the reason for Glimpse's ultimate demise was none of those things.

Apparently, according to the project lead, Glimpse was destroyed after The Lunduke Journal called it a "woke fork":

"If you're angry at Mozilla because Bryan Lunduke said mean things about them, then as someone whose previous project was torn apart after one of his videos called it a "woke fork", I kindly invite you to go [CENSORED] yourself."

What was this "previous project"?  Glimpse.  Here's the full post (on Mastodon) from the Glimpse lead... so you can see the full context.

So, there you have it.  One of the most prominent Open Source projects in the world (GIMP), is forked and renamed in order to cater to a politically correct mob.  Then that fork dies.

And, according to the project leadership, The Lunduke Journal caused it to be "torn apart" after off-handedly calling it a "woke fork".

A few thoughts and take-aways:

  1. Focusing on woke and extreme Leftist politics is a death sentence for software projects and organizations.  We're seeing this in lawsuits against corporations -- and many Open Source projects floundering and fracturing after pursuing Woke & DEI political agendas.  The story of "Glimpse" is one of many examples.
  2. Don't mess with The Lunduke Journal.  Apparently I can utter two words and destroy entire projects.
