From Operating Systems to Web Browsers. There's lots of Woke Software out there. Let's take a look at some decidedly NON-Woke options.

There’s a heck of a lot of Woke Software out there. Especially in the Open Source world.

What, exactly, is “Woke Software”? Glad you asked. Because I’ve defined it.

Simple, right?

I’m sure we can all think of some examples. Mozilla Firefox, NixOS, Godot, and a whole mountain of others.

But what about… Non-Woke Software? You know… software which doesn’t hate you for being a normal person?

Luckily there is a growing number of decidedly Non-Woke options. And, even better, some of them are truly outstanding. Below I have collected my personal favorites as of August of 2025.

Operating Systems

Multiple Non-Woke Linux Distributions (and even a few BSD options) are available.

OpenMandriva - A classic Linux distribution.
GhostBSD - A FreeBSD based distro focused on usability.
Omarchy - An Arch + Hyprland configuration.
Devuan - A fork of Debian without SystemD.

I can personally vouch for the quality of all of those options. They are all unique and worth taking for a test-drive.

My personal favorite? OpenMandriva.

Web Browsers

As of right now, there are two web browsers I can recommend.

Brave - A Chromium based browser focused on privacy and ad blocking.
Ladybird - A from-scratch browser (not yet usable for a daily driver).

Though, honestly, only Brave is truly usable, right now, as a daily driver. But Ladybird is making such rapid progress that it seems worth including in this list to keep an eye on.

E-Mail Clients

If you’re looking for a desktop Email client, there’s really only one noteworthy option at the moment.

Betterbird - A fork of Mozilla Thunderbird.

While Betterbird has not made a point of being Non-Woke, they are a fork of Mozilla Thunderbird. And Mozilla is the king of Open Source Wokeness.

Other Software

Here’s a few Non-Woke pieces of software which just don’t fit in the other categories. Hopefully, as the quantity of decidedly Non-Woke, quality software grows, we’ll have enough to add a few additional categories.

Redot - A fork of the Godot game engine.
XLibre - A fork of the Xorg X11 Server.
Hyprland - A Wayland window manager / Desktop Environment.
SQLite - A small, fast SQL database engine.

Once again, all quality, recommended software.

While this list may not be a mile long, it’s growing — and many of these projects are seeing significant success. Which is pretty fantastic.

The futility of Ad-Blockers

Ads are filling the entirety of the Web -- websites, podcasts, YouTube videos, etc. -- at an increasing rate. Prices for those ad placements are plummeting. Consumers are desperate to use ad-blockers to make the web palatable. Google (and others) are desperate to break and block ad-blockers. All of which results in... more ads and lower pay for creators.

It's a fascinatingly annoying cycle. And there's only one viable way out of it.

Those in power with openSUSE make it clear they will not allow me anywhere near anything related to the openSUSE project. Ever. For any reason.

Well, that settles that, then! Guess I won't be contributing to openSUSE! 🤣

Finance called IT because a customer owed us $240,000 and nobody could find them.

Customer name: TEST CUSTOMER DO NOT USE.

I recognized it immediately.

I created that account two years ago to test our billing software.

It had a fake address.

A fake phone number.

The contact email was [email protected].

Apparently Sales found the account last quarter and used it to demonstrate our new quoting system.

Someone accidentally converted the demonstration quote into a real order.

That triggered an invoice.

The invoice went unpaid.

Our collections software sent seven payment reminders to [email protected].

Nobody responded.

Finance escalated the account to a debt collection agency.

The agency spent three weeks trying to locate TEST CUSTOMER DO NOT USE.

They reported the company had no registered address, no employees, and no known assets.

Finance classified the account as high-risk.

Yesterday Legal asked me for the customer's original contract.

Saturday, October 31st is the last day to get your name into the LCOS About Window by picking up a Lifetime Lunduke Journal Subscription.

LCOS 1.0 Ships on November 1st!

A release date has officially been selected!

The Lunduke Computer Operating System (LCOS) 1.0 will ship on November 1st… just two weeks from now!

A few quick tidbits worth mentioning:

If you would like to help test the final Beta releases on your own hardware, grab the latest ISO from Lunduke.com. Report any issues on GitHub, the Lunduke Forum, or via X direct message.
Want to do even more to help out? Grab a “pay what you want” Lifetime Subscription and get your name in the “About This Computer” window inside LCOS 1.0! These funds go directly towards hardware testing and other expenses.

Worth repeating: If you want your name in the LCOS About Window (see the screenshot below), you only have through October 31st to grab a Lifetime Subscription to The Lunduke Journal and make that happen.

LCOS 0.9.3 has Landed! Plus: How to Help.

The Lunduke Computer Operating System (LCOS) is flying towards the official, 1.0 release — with version 0.9.3 now available for testing!

Between now and 1.0, LCOS is laser focused on a) fixing bugs and b) making sure it runs (and runs well) on as much hardware as possible.

Right now, LCOS needs your help. Here’s how:

Test the latest LCOS release on your hardware. Hit any snags? Report them on GitHub, the Lunduke Forum, or via DM on X.
Donate to LCOS (and The Lunduke Journal), so that we can expand our hardware testing lab (among other expenses).
