FAQ about Lunduke Journal moving to Locals
(Plus some tips to make the most of it.)
May 13, 2023

Some of you have a few questions about The Lunduke Journal’s migration from Substack over to Locals. In the interests of saving me some time — I am just going to answer them here, for everyone, all at once.

Q: Will the archive of articles on Substack stay available?

A: Yes. While no new articles, podcasts, or videos will be published to Substack… the massive back catalog will remain available on Substack. So all links to Lunduke.Substack.com will continue to work.

Q: When will Substack be decommissioned?

A: As soon as possible. The goal is to get everyone over to Locals before the May 27th live stream of “Linux Sucks 2023” — That way nobody misses out on the fun. But sooner is better. In other words: Quickly.

Q: Is there an RSS Feed, or other feature we enjoyed on Substack, on Locals?

A: At this exact moment there is not an RSS feed replacement over on Locals. However I am working on a solution to that problem right now and hope to have something to share in the coming days. Likewise the development team at Locals is working with me to provide some new Locals functionality that will greatly benefit The Lunduke Journal. This will help make Locals the perfect home for us going forward. Overall Locals already provides us with far more functionality than Substack did… and we’re working to fill the few gaps that remain.

Q: Will the Discord Channel still be around?

A: Yes. The official Lunduke Journal Discord Channel will continue to exist after Substack gets decommissioned. While the Discord Channel is not a primary part of The Lunduke Journal, it does come in handy from time to time and some members of the community enjoy using it. All subscribers on Locals can find the Discord invite link here.

Q: Will my Substack Annual or Lifetime subscription transfer over to Locals?

A: Yes. If you have a yearly (or Lifetime) subscription on Substack simply create a free account on Lunduke.Locals.com. Then email Lunduke ([email protected]) with your account email address. Your Locals account can then be granted access.

One request: If your annual subscription is set to renew sometime soon it would save Lunduke a great deal of work if you could cancel your Substack and create a new subscription on Locals. For this reason I am offering some pretty big discounts on subscriptions to make this easier (and hopefully put an extra smile on your face).

Q: Will my Substack Monthly subscription transfer over to Locals?

A: It is important to me that The Lunduke Journal does not automatically create accounts for subscribers on other platforms. This is simply a matter of respect for you.

As such, you will need to cancel your Substack monthly subscription and create a new subscription on Lunduke.Locals.com. You can either choose to go with a standard Monthly or Yearly subscription on Locals, or you can use the discount to pick up a Lifetime Subscription (only available till Monday, the 15th).

Lunduke’s Recommendation:

To get the best possible deal, and make the most of the move over to Lunduke.Locals.com, I recommend the following:

  • Grab the Lifetime Subscription before that option goes away on Monday. Not needing to pay ever again is just so nice. Good way to save money if you’re planning to still be a nerd a year from now. ;)

  • Read this post to get a good primer on how Locals works.

  • Then read this post for how the Content system on Locals works (where you can get all the videos, podcasts, PDFs, etc.).

  • Grab the Locals iOS or Android app if you are a smartphone-type-person. All of the content is available from both the app or the website — but having the app is handy for listening to the podcasts or reading the articles on the go.

If you have any other questions — feel free to ask either on Lunduke.Locals.com or via email at [email protected]!

The futility of Ad-Blockers

Ads are filling the entirety of the Web -- websites, podcasts, YouTube videos, etc. -- at an increasing rate. Prices for those ad placements are plummeting. Consumers are desperate to use ad-blockers to make the web palatable. Google (and others) are desperate to break and block ad-blockers. All of which results in... more ads and lower pay for creators.

It's a fascinatingly annoying cycle. And there's only one viable way out of it.

openSUSE says "No Lunduke allowed!"

Those in power with openSUSE make it clear they will not allow me anywhere near anything related to the openSUSE project. Ever. For any reason.

Well, that settles that, then! Guess I won't be contributing to openSUSE! 🤣

ISO a physical or digital media price aggregator.

Looking for basically PCPartPicker for movies and music. Several of these sites exist for streaming services (find out which streaming platforms currently have Friends). But, I want this for physical or digital ownership. I want to be able to search for "The Mentalist" or "Thomas Bergersen" and be shown a list of prices on sites (Amazon, moviesunlimited, 7digital, etc)

Anyone have this out there?

How’s My New (Used) Linux Box Doing?

In a word: terrific.

I picked up a 2-year-old, Mac-mini-sized PC with a Ryzen 7 (8 cores / 16 threads), 64 GB RAM, and a 2 TB NVMe drive—about the same price as a Mac mini. I’ve since moved all of my hosted VPS activities onto this local Linux box.

I continue to be very pleased with Linux Mint. For remote desktop, I’m using NoMachine NX, which is significantly better than VNC. I’m usually running Linux on much older hardware, so it’s genuinely enjoyable to have a machine that feels this responsive under Linux.

The primary workload is Docker containers, and unlike Windows, Docker is Linux-native—so all 64 GB of RAM is available. On Windows, you have to pre-allocate memory specifically for Docker, which always felt a bit clunky.

This machine was running Windows 11 originally, but it had started rebooting every night—not tied to Windows Update, just… something else. It reached the point where I was preparing to send it back for repair ...

Stupid moment...
You know how they say, if you're having issues, make sure all your updates are installed and everything is up to date?
Ya, it's really not bad advice.
I have this HP tablet that I've used for years just to run my xlights show for 3 months every year. It's not a bad tablet, 3rd gen i7, 6gb ram, but it has ethernet, and 3 type A USB ports, and it's quite snappy to use.
Since I won't run Windows 11, I decided it was time to install Linux. Talk about a pain in the rear. The UEFI was horrible. I had to tweak things just right and make a specific style thumb drive and it only booted from USB on 1 port. (Guess how long it took me to figure that one out.)
Anyways, after 2 days of getting frustrated, I finally got Debian Live to boot. I was so thankful something worked I just said forget it and installed Debian.
That went fine but upon 1st boot, Debian has all sorts of errors flashing up about problems with the BIOS settings.
One of those errors pointed out the fact that I should check ...

$89 Lifetime Lunduke Subs ends this week!

Quick heads up, that the $89 Lifetime Subscription to The Lunduke Journal discount ends… at the end of this week!

Discounting Lifetime Subscriptions by over 70% was an absolute blast. So many of you took advantage of the offer that we’re now up to four Lifetime Subscriber walls at the end of every video. Crazy!

But something that awesome can’t last forever. Which means that, in just a few days, Lifetime Subscriptions will return to their regular price of $300.

With no plans to do another wild discount like that any time soon.

So.

  1. If you haven’t already, snag an $89 (via Bitcoin) or $99 (via Substack or Locals) Lifetime Subscription.

  2. Then let me know if you’d like to be added to the Lifetime Wall of Shame Awesomeness.

My guess is, a the current rate, that 4th Lifetime Wall will be full by Friday.

Bonkers.

And, once again, thank you to each and every subscriber. The Lunduke Journal would not be possible without you.

Lunduke Journal Week In Review - Jan 16th, 2025

Whew! It’s been another wild week for Tech News!

Here’s a crazy stat for ya:

We are currently 16 days into 2026, and The Lunduke Journal has already recorded 19 shows (17 of which have been published on every platform, and 2 others to be published this weekend everywhere… but are already available via the MP4 download page). And that’s with taking New Year’s Day off (and getting the flu this week).

It’s a heck of a lot of Tech News, to be sure.

Lunduke’s Top Stories for the Week

If you only have time to watch a few of shows, I recommend these 3 as being the most interesting (or important… or just… strange) from the last week:

In other words: A pretty gosh-darned crazy week for Linux.

(Those links are to Lunduke.Substack.com, but you can watch all of those shows on any other platform. As always.)

Other Tidbits of Awesomeness

A few other notes on this, most excellent, Friday!

And, with that, I leave you with a screenshot of the MP4 listing of the shows so far in 2026. Bonkers.

Lunduke's Lifetime Subscriber Wall 3 is almost full!

Holy moly.

This afternoon I sat down to update the 3rd Lunduke Journal Lifetime Subscriber wall — adding in all of you who sent in requests over the last week or so.

And, boy howdy, were there a lot of you! So many, in fact, that the 3rd Lifetime Wall only has room for around 6 or 7 more names (depending on the name lengths)! That’s crazy!

If you want to make it onto “The Lunduke Journal Lifetime Subscriber” Wall number 3… send me an email (bryan at lunduke.com) with the way you would like your name to be displayed.

Or, if you’re not already a Lifetime Subscriber, remedy that for $89. (Which, you know, is a pretty gosh darned good value.) … Then send me that email requesting to be added to the wall.

Once Wall 3 is full, we’ll start in on Wall number 4 (that’s nuts). At the current rate, I expect Wall 4 to debut this week.

And, as always, thank you for your support. Whatever kind of subscription you have, it is deeply appreciated. Monthly, Yearly, or Lifetime. All are amazing. You make The Lunduke Journal possible.

You rule.

-Lunduke
