Some of you have a few questions about The Lunduke Journal’s migration from Substack over to Locals. In the interests of saving me some time — I am just going to answer them here, for everyone, all at once.
Q: Will the archive of articles on Substack stay available?
A: Yes. While no new articles, podcasts, or videos will be published to Substack… the massive back catalog will remain available on Substack. So all links to Lunduke.Substack.com will continue to work.
Q: When will Substack be decommissioned?
A: As soon as possible. The goal is to get everyone over to Locals before the May 27th live stream of “Linux Sucks 2023” — That way nobody misses out on the fun. But sooner is better. In other words: Quickly.
Q: Is there an RSS Feed, or other feature we enjoyed on Substack, on Locals?
A: At this exact moment there is not an RSS feed replacement over on Locals. However I am working on a solution to that problem right now and hope to have something to share in the coming days. Likewise the development team at Locals is working with me to provide some new Locals functionality that will greatly benefit The Lunduke Journal. This will help make Locals the perfect home for us going forward. Overall Locals already provides us with far more functionality than Substack did… and we’re working to fill the few gaps that remain.
Q: Will the Discord Channel still be around?
A: Yes. The official Lunduke Journal Discord Channel will continue to exist after Substack gets decommissioned. While the Discord Channel is not a primary part of The Lunduke Journal, it does come in handy from time to time and some members of the community enjoy using it. All subscribers on Locals can find the Discord invite link here.
Q: Will my Substack Annual or Lifetime subscription transfer over to Locals?
A: Yes. If you have a yearly (or Lifetime) subscription on Substack simply create a free account on Lunduke.Locals.com. Then email Lunduke ([email protected]) with your account email address. Your Locals account can then be granted access.
One request: If your annual subscription is set to renew sometime soon it would save Lunduke a great deal of work if you could cancel your Substack and create a new subscription on Locals. For this reason I am offering some pretty big discounts on subscriptions to make this easier (and hopefully put an extra smile on your face).
Q: Will my Substack Monthly subscription transfer over to Locals?
A: It is important to me that The Lunduke Journal does not automatically create accounts for subscribers on other platforms. This is simply a matter of respect for you.
As such, you will need to cancel your Substack monthly subscription and create a new subscription on Lunduke.Locals.com. You can either choose to go with a standard Monthly or Yearly subscription on Locals, or you can use the discount to pick up a Lifetime Subscription (only available till Monday, the 15th).
Lunduke’s Recommendation:
To get the best possible deal, and make the most of the move over to Lunduke.Locals.com, I recommend the following:
Grab the Lifetime Subscription before that option goes away on Monday. Not needing to pay ever again is just so nice. Good way to save money if you’re planning to still be a nerd a year from now. ;)
Read this post to get a good primer on how Locals works.
Then read this post for how the Content system on Locals works (where you can get all the videos, podcasts, PDFs, etc.).
Grab the Locals iOS or Android app if you are a smartphone-type-person. All of the content is available from both the app or the website — but having the app is handy for listening to the podcasts or reading the articles on the go.
If you have any other questions — feel free to ask either on Lunduke.Locals.com or via email at [email protected]!
