Make Linux look like MacOS 9
Because Platinum is beautiful.

We've covered how to make your Linux desktop look like Windows 95, Windows XP, and even Amiga OS.

And, sure, that's cool.  But what about all of the people that yearn for the glorious look and feel of MacOS 8 and 9?

Well the same wonderful person who brought us that Windows 95 Linux theme did the same for MacOS 9! He calls it “Platinum9” (Platinum was the name of the default appearance style of MacOS 8 and 9).

And it’s pretty close to the real thing!

A BASH shell with a MacOS 9 look?  Yes, please.

Note the Apple Platinum color scheme and controls, the Mac OS 8 / 9 window borders and decorations, the appropriate font, and even the MacOS 9 icons.

It’s not quite a perfect recreation of the original. There’s a few issues:

  • The menu bar doesn’t look quite right.

  • The “window-shade” style is off.

  • The launcher down on the bottom doesn’t quite replace the OS 9 control strip.

  • The non-active window look is also a bit off.

Just the same, it’s very close in most of the ways that matter. And it makes for a very pleasant, “semi-retro” desktop look and feel.

Honestly, the icons, font, and window decorator really covers the key “feel”. Well done.

It's not exactly MacOS 9.  But it's close.

This all was specifically designed for use with XFCE… but most of it should work well in other GTK based desktops.

I recommend manually moving your desktop icons over to the right hand side (the way classic MacOS handles it).  Just to give the look a little extra authenticity.

Getting it set up is pretty simple. In fact the entire instructions, from the GitHub page, are:

Place the folder NineIcons in ~/.icons (created the folder if it doesn't exists), same with the GTK theme, place it in .themes.

For the fonts, place them in .fonts and update your font cache and you should be good to go.

Open Source is Anti-Free Speech

The first instinct, in almost every Open Source & Linux organization - From GNOME to Arch, NixOS to openSUSE - is to censor. To mute, delete, and block any who disagree.

I have the receipts.

The futility of Ad-Blockers

Ads are filling the entirety of the Web -- websites, podcasts, YouTube videos, etc. -- at an increasing rate. Prices for those ad placements are plummeting. Consumers are desperate to use ad-blockers to make the web palatable. Google (and others) are desperate to break and block ad-blockers. All of which results in... more ads and lower pay for creators.

It's a fascinatingly annoying cycle. And there's only one viable way out of it.

openSUSE says "No Lunduke allowed!"

Those in power with openSUSE make it clear they will not allow me anywhere near anything related to the openSUSE project. Ever. For any reason.

Well, that settles that, then! Guess I won't be contributing to openSUSE! 🤣

The Great Tech Industry Survey — 2025

I’ll be announcing the survey tomorrow. But technically it’s already live if anyone wants to get a head start. ;)

Last year we had over 7,200 people take a similar (smaller, less refined) survey. I think we can easily beat those numbers with the survey this year.

Very, very curious to see what the results will look like. Excited to load it all into Excel and start analyzing it.

I found something new on this year's tax return form:

Federal law requires this consent form be provided to you. Unless authorized by law, we cannot use your Tax Return Information for purposes other than the preparation and filing of your tax return without your consent.

Basically, tax services must get approval to use your information for anything except tax filing purposes.

You are not required to complete this form to use our tax return preparation services. If you do not want to consent, simply click “Remind Me Later” at the bottom of the screen. If we obtain your signature on this form by conditioning our services on your consent, your consent will not be valid. Your consent is valid for the amount of time that you specify. If you do not specify the duration of your consent, your consent is valid for one year from the date of signature.

Guess whose tax information won't be sold this year? The site begged for my consent, and begging they can continue to do.

This song seems topical. #SundaySounds

The Great Tech Demographic Survey of 2025

There are a lot of questions we don't have good answers for.

  • Do Trump voters prefer EMacs or Vi?
  • Who is happier with their life... people who use Tabs or Spaces?
  • Does your age impact your choice of Web Browser?
  • Who is more likely to support censorship... Rust Programmers or C Programmers?

Do you know the answers to those questions?  No, I don't either.

Let's find out.

The Great Tech Industry Demographic Survey of 2025

This survey is massive -- containing questions on everything from Operating System preferences to religion and politicsProgramming languages and... workplace discrimination.  It even gets into Cryptocurrency and Text Editor preferences.

Seriously.

  • All answers are 100% anonymous (no account is needed), no email address is collected.
  • All questions are optional (only answer the ones you feel comfortable with).
  • The questions are all presented in random order.
  • All of the (anonymous) results will be published.

The 2024 edition of this survey (last year) was taken by over 7,200 people across the entire IT industry -- an absolutely massive sample size (larger than most US Presidential Election polls).  For this new 2025 survey... we're aiming even higher.

Are you a computer nerd?  Do you work in the IT industry?

Set aside a few minutes and take the 2025 survey.

Then tell everyone about it.  The more people who take the survey -- across as many companies and communities as possible -- the better the data will be.
