Lunduke Journal Calendar updated: Big nerdy shows, big events, & live chats
July 30, 2023

So many big events coming up around The Lunduke Journal — across all three sites (Lunduke.Locals.com, NerdyEntertainment.Locals.com, & ConservativeNerds.Locals.com).

Big live streams and shows. Themed weeks. Live chats. The works. So rad.

Below are all the details.

The Official Calendars

Every site in The Lunduke Journal family now has an official calendar of events that has the most up-to-date details (available on website, or in the App):

Live Chats

"Live Chat w/Lunduke" - August 3rd (Thursday) at 2pm Central Time
[Live Streamed at Lunduke.Locals.com]

Hang out in a live text chat… accompanied by Lunduke on a live video stream. Right from Locals — either on the website, or in the iOS / Android App.

The Big Shows

We’ve got some mighty big shows scheduled across all three sites in The Lunduke Journal family. The kind of events nerds talk about for a long time to come. Shows like “Linux Sucks”, “Programmers are Evil”, and “macOS Sucks”.

Each of these shows will live stream (with a live chat) on the dates below — and be available, on-demand, immediately after the live-stream.

"The Great Myths of Computer History" - August 12th (Saturday) at 9am Central Time
[Live Streamed & On-Demand at Lunduke.Locals.com]

The world of computing is filled to the brim with myths and legends. Some of them true. Many of them... not. Lunduke spends the full hour telling you which is which… guaranteed, some of this will surprise you.

"Star Trek Sucks" - August 12th (Saturday) at 10am Central Time
[Live Streamed & On-Demand at NerdyEntertainment.Locals.com]

Watch as a life-long fan rants and raves about Star Trek - old and new - for a solid hour. Because, sometimes, a nerd just needs to vent.

“A.I., Smartphones, IoT, & App Stores (The Four Horsemen of the Digital Apocalypse)” - August 26th (Saturday) at 9am Central Time
[Live Streamed & On-Demand at Lunduke.Locals.com]

The end is nigh, the digital apocalypse is at hand. When I am finished, you will be a believer.

“Straight, White, & Nerdy (and darn proud of it)” - August 26th (Saturday) at 10am Central Time
[Live Streamed & On-Demand at ConservativeNerds.Locals.com]

A joyful celebration. While the title may make some bristle… there will not be a single mean-spirited word here. About anyone.

“Linux Sucks 2023” - Date to Be Announced
[Live Streamed & On-Demand at Lunduke.Locals.com]

The 2023 edition of Linux Sucks is going to be one heck of a show. The date and time will be announced in the coming days.

Lunduke.Locals.com Themed Weeks

Roughly once per month, we do a themed week at Lunduke.Locals.com. A chance to focus on one particular aspect of computing.

Linux From Scratch Week - Aug 23rd - Aug 30th

Ever want to build a complete Linux system… from scratch? That’s exactly what we’ll be doing all week long. Join the rest of the nerds in The Lunduke Journal community as we embark on this epic quest. Because doing a challenge like this is always best with some support around.

Windows 3.1 Week - Sep 20th - Sep 27th

Re-live the glory days of the early 1990s as we celebrate Windows 3.1. The good, the bad, & the ugly. How it came into existence, highlights from the time, and how (exactly) it can still be used (and learned from) today.

Text Adventure Week - Oct 18th - Oct 25th

Interactive Fiction (read: text adventures like “Zork”) is a mainstay of computer gaming. Every year, during October, the entries for the Interactive Fiction Competition are made publicly available for judging. During “Text Adventure Week”, The Lunduke Journal will — as a community — be participating in that judging process. Want to spend a week playing text adventure games, sharing them with other nerds, and judging them? This week is for you. Oh, and we’ll also be talking about the history of text adventures as well. Naturally.

Amiga Week - Dec 6th - Dec 13th

AmigaOS. MorphOS. AROS. A full week focused on the Amiga… and everything Amiga-adjacent. The history and the modern day usage. The hardware, the software, emulation, and more.

The futility of Ad-Blockers

Ads are filling the entirety of the Web -- websites, podcasts, YouTube videos, etc. -- at an increasing rate. Prices for those ad placements are plummeting. Consumers are desperate to use ad-blockers to make the web palatable. Google (and others) are desperate to break and block ad-blockers. All of which results in... more ads and lower pay for creators.

It's a fascinatingly annoying cycle. And there's only one viable way out of it.

openSUSE says "No Lunduke allowed!"

Those in power with openSUSE make it clear they will not allow me anywhere near anything related to the openSUSE project. Ever. For any reason.

Well, that settles that, then! Guess I won't be contributing to openSUSE! 🤣

Code Reviews Prior to Shipping

A project I created for myself is code complete. But as we know, code complete and "ship it" are two different things. I'm using Codex Web to do the reviews as it's connected to my GitHub repo. A sophisticated product needs more than "do a code review". I worked with ChatGPT to first come up with a set of reviews. Then I'll have ChatGPT write the review prompts, and THEN I'll give them to Codex Web to generate the reviews.
This look before you leap using AI approach increases the quality of outcomes. I involve the AI in the planning and not just in the execution.

Didn’t you just write a code review post? Yes. I was discussing the review I would do after each sprint.

Sprints? Don’t we all hate corporate agile? We hate bureaucratic processes that waste our time. The concept of breaking work down into atomic, testable, functional “sprints” is quite helpful when using coding AI’s. More on that in another post.

Do you ever test yourself? Yes. I simply have the AI ...

This is going to be bad: https://amutable.com/

Lennart Poettering has founded a new company that plans to do remote attestation for Linux. Even if their stated use cases can be good - if you are the one controlling the keys, IMO this is going to end up like SafetyNet/Play Integrity.

Stupid moment...
You know how they say, if you're having issues, make sure all your updates are installed and everything is up to date?
Ya, it's really not bad advice.
I have this HP tablet that I've used for years just to run my xlights show for 3 months every year. It's not a bad tablet, 3rd gen i7, 6gb ram, but it has ethernet, and 3 type A USB ports, and it's quite snappy to use.
Since I won't run Windows 11, I decided it was time to install Linux. Talk about a pain in the rear. The UEFI was horrible. I had to tweak things just right and make a specific style thumb drive and it only booted from USB on 1 port. (Guess how long it took me to figure that one out.)
Anyways, after 2 days of getting frustrated, I finally got Debian Live to boot. I was so thankful something worked I just said forget it and installed Debian.
That went fine but upon 1st boot, Debian has all sorts of errors flashing up about problems with the BIOS settings.
One of those errors pointed out the fact that I should check ...

$89 Lifetime Lunduke Subs ends this week!

Quick heads up, that the $89 Lifetime Subscription to The Lunduke Journal discount ends… at the end of this week!

Discounting Lifetime Subscriptions by over 70% was an absolute blast. So many of you took advantage of the offer that we’re now up to four Lifetime Subscriber walls at the end of every video. Crazy!

But something that awesome can’t last forever. Which means that, in just a few days, Lifetime Subscriptions will return to their regular price of $300.

With no plans to do another wild discount like that any time soon.

So.

  1. If you haven’t already, snag an $89 (via Bitcoin) or $99 (via Substack or Locals) Lifetime Subscription.

  2. Then let me know if you’d like to be added to the Lifetime Wall of Shame Awesomeness.

My guess is, a the current rate, that 4th Lifetime Wall will be full by Friday.

Bonkers.

And, once again, thank you to each and every subscriber. The Lunduke Journal would not be possible without you.

Lunduke Journal Week In Review - Jan 16th, 2025

Whew! It’s been another wild week for Tech News!

Here’s a crazy stat for ya:

We are currently 16 days into 2026, and The Lunduke Journal has already recorded 19 shows (17 of which have been published on every platform, and 2 others to be published this weekend everywhere… but are already available via the MP4 download page). And that’s with taking New Year’s Day off (and getting the flu this week).

It’s a heck of a lot of Tech News, to be sure.

Lunduke’s Top Stories for the Week

If you only have time to watch a few of shows, I recommend these 3 as being the most interesting (or important… or just… strange) from the last week:

In other words: A pretty gosh-darned crazy week for Linux.

(Those links are to Lunduke.Substack.com, but you can watch all of those shows on any other platform. As always.)

Other Tidbits of Awesomeness

A few other notes on this, most excellent, Friday!

And, with that, I leave you with a screenshot of the MP4 listing of the shows so far in 2026. Bonkers.

Lunduke's Lifetime Subscriber Wall 3 is almost full!

Holy moly.

This afternoon I sat down to update the 3rd Lunduke Journal Lifetime Subscriber wall — adding in all of you who sent in requests over the last week or so.

And, boy howdy, were there a lot of you! So many, in fact, that the 3rd Lifetime Wall only has room for around 6 or 7 more names (depending on the name lengths)! That’s crazy!

If you want to make it onto “The Lunduke Journal Lifetime Subscriber” Wall number 3… send me an email (bryan at lunduke.com) with the way you would like your name to be displayed.

Or, if you’re not already a Lifetime Subscriber, remedy that for $89. (Which, you know, is a pretty gosh darned good value.) … Then send me that email requesting to be added to the wall.

Once Wall 3 is full, we’ll start in on Wall number 4 (that’s nuts). At the current rate, I expect Wall 4 to debut this week.

And, as always, thank you for your support. Whatever kind of subscription you have, it is deeply appreciated. Monthly, Yearly, or Lifetime. All are amazing. You make The Lunduke Journal possible.

You rule.
