Zuck Regrets Censoring Facebook at Request of Democrats

"The White House, repeatedly pressured our teams for months to censor certain COVID-19 content, including humor and satire."

Warning: This show is extremely political. It has to be. There simply is no way to discuss the topic without being political. Just the same, the core of the topic is regarding the usability of digital, online publishing and messaging platforms -- a topic near and dear to the heart of those of us who have lived through the ages of the BBS, Usenet, Geocities, and the like.

The futility of Ad-Blockers

Ads are filling the entirety of the Web -- websites, podcasts, YouTube videos, etc. -- at an increasing rate. Prices for those ad placements are plummeting. Consumers are desperate to use ad-blockers to make the web palatable. Google (and others) are desperate to break and block ad-blockers. All of which results in... more ads and lower pay for creators.

It's a fascinatingly annoying cycle. And there's only one viable way out of it.

openSUSE says "No Lunduke allowed!"

Those in power with openSUSE make it clear they will not allow me anywhere near anything related to the openSUSE project. Ever. For any reason.

Well, that settles that, then! Guess I won't be contributing to openSUSE! 🤣

Researching "Active Listening" Slide Deck leak published by 404Media.

404 Media has published what they are claiming is an "Active Listening" slide deck from Cox. The short version: promoting (internally) using microphones on smartphones to listen to conversations -- then parse those conversations and use key words to show targeted advertisements to people based on the accounts connected to the phone.

https://www.404media.co/heres-the-pitch-deck-for-active-listening-ad-targeting/

Other outlets are reporting that this is proof that this capability is currently being utilized. Such as this article from TweakTown:

https://www.tweaktown.com/news/100282/facebook-partner-admits-smartphone-microphones-listen-to-people-talk-serve-better-ads/index.html

I am currently trying to verify the authenticity of this leak.

404Media published a very similar slide deck roughly 9 months ago. And, it should be noted, that neither that previous leak -- or this new one -- claim that this functionality is currently in use (as many outlets -- including "TweakTown" -- ...

Dependency H€ll strikes again!
(via DistroWatch.com)

The maintainer of bcachefs-tools yoinked it out of Debian Testing and Unstable after the dependency requirements of the tools became too difficult (read: mutually incompatible) with Debian. Part of this seems to be Debian’s conservative approach to updates, but a lot of it seems to related to the attitudes and approaches Rust developers take when building software with Rust. The bcachefs-tools package is still in Debian Experimental branch in case someone else wants to pick it up again.

But anyway, even if Rust helps you write software that is more secure and robust, if software you create with it is a royal PITA to package and deploy, are you really making the software ecosystem better? Especially if your choices force other negative changes? ::discuss amongst yourselves::

Watch the planes in the sky near you... from your Linux terminal.
Because who doesn't want a mini, text-mode Air Traffic Control Center in their shell?

Ready to have you mind blown by one of the coolest command line (Text User Interface) pieces of software I've seen in a long time?

Behold the awesomeness of adsb_deku!

While the name may not exaclty roll of the tongue... what it does is truly radical (in the 1980s sense of the word).

In short: It allows you to watch the flight paths of planes in your area.  Visually.  It's like a mini air traffic control center.  In your Linux terminal.

Seriously.  Check this out.

Keep watching.  Then watch it again.  Awesome.

Adsb_deku works by using a Software Defined Radio -- to capture ADS-B (short for Automatic Dependent Surveillance–Broadcast) data from 1090Mhz -- and then deserialize that data using the deku library ("ADS-B" deserialized using "deku"... hence the name "adsb-deku").

The results are then displayed using the Ratatui library (which is specifically for making visually impressive terminal applications).

Do I have any real, practical need for monitoring the planes in the sky using my terminal?

No.  No, I do not.

But the fact that I can -- assuming I pick up a Software Defined Radio (which... now I feel like I have to) -- is freaking awesome.
