The futility of Ad-Blockers

Ads are filling the entirety of the Web -- websites, podcasts, YouTube videos, etc. -- at an increasing rate. Prices for those ad placements are plummeting. Consumers are desperate to use ad-blockers to make the web palatable. Google (and others) are desperate to break and block ad-blockers. All of which results in... more ads and lower pay for creators.

It's a fascinatingly annoying cycle. And there's only one viable way out of it.

Those in power with openSUSE make it clear they will not allow me anywhere near anything related to the openSUSE project. Ever. For any reason.

Well, that settles that, then! Guess I won't be contributing to openSUSE! 🤣

WinAmp and the Problem Of Open Source Business Model

Winamp is just the latest face on an uncomfortable fact - Open Source is a risky, ney terrible, business model.

Before we get back to Winamp, let’s consider another recent blow up over open source and business…Wordpress vs WP Engine. The company behind the Wordpress opens source product, Automattic, is suing WP Engine and vice versa. The details are unimportant for this discussion but it’s the classic “we give away our source code and make our money with the hosted version”. Every business who makes their money on a product they develop via an open source model, has to keep SOME exclusivity somewhere in order to make money. After all, they are giving away the source code. They don’t want to give away their ability to make money. We all can download wordpress for free and host our own sites. It’s open source. Wordpress.com makes it’s money when you pay THEM to host for you. WP-Engine saw an opportunity to take ...
