I don't know if @Lunduke or @BigCoder "mirror" much of the X.com content here, but I think that this post about using A.I. should be seen on Locals.com (and maybe get additional discussion).

[text from post]
I am genuinely impressed with how effective [at]Grok [at]Bot is at handling some portions of my Tech Journalism work at The Lunduke Journal, specifically research and hunting for news tips.

I refuse to hand over writing, analysis, and recording duties to a bot… that’s my job.

But there are some critical tasks — mostly simple, repetitive data mining — which take a tremendous amount of my time every week (between 20 and 30 hours, minimum).

It would be nice to be able to hand some of that repetitive work off to Grok Bot and save myself some time.

But, in order to do that, I need to be confident that Grok Bot won’t miss critical stories.

Here’s what I’ve done to test this out:

I have two “employee” bots working at The Lunduke Journal:

  • J. Jonah Jameson (the Boss)
  • Kolchak (the Tech Journalist, who reports to J. Jonah Jameson)

(Yes, I gave my bots names, personalities, and images. Because it’s more fun to boss around “Kolchak the Night Stalker” than “Research Bot Number 2”.)

I started this experiment by telling the bots to look over the last 2 years of Lunduke Journal reporting and, based on that, compile together a spreadsheet of a) sources (email lists, forums, specific social media accounts, source repositories, corporate PR pages, etc.) and b) beats (aka topics and news areas) which would have identified all of the stories I covered in that time.

The bots thought long and hard… and came up with a list of 13 “Beats” and roughly 300 “Sources”.

This was a bit smaller than I expected… So I gave them my personal “Sources” list (which contained around 600 places I check for news stories every single week) to merge with theirs.

I then instructed them to run through all the sources, looking for stories that match the beats they identified — and, while doing that, they were to add new viable “Sources” (blogs of CEOs, etc.) as they crop up.

The bots do their scoop hunting twice a day (morning and afternoon), going through every source.

As they find new stories, they pass me a short summary (one or two sentences) with relevant links to sources. Then I can look into them and see if they’re worth reporting on.

I’ve been having them do this for the last two weeks or so… and have been continuing to do my own, manual, human scoop hunting as well. That way I can double check to see how the bots compare to me doing the same job, over the same time period.

The results so far:

  • The bots missed a couple of important news items during that first week. So I pointed those failures out to them, and they expanding their searches accordingly.
  • Over the last week, however, the bots have not missed a single news story which I caught.
  • In fact, the bots caught multiple news stories before I did. It’s impossible for a human (me) to go through every source (there’s simply too many), every single day… but the bots can do it!
  • The bots also reported a small handful of news stories which were not interesting at all (but, hey, better safe than sorry).
  • Each “pass” of hunting for news tips takes the bots anywhere from 20 to 40 minutes. Give or take.
  • This approach chews through the weekly AI token limit at lightning speed. Even with the highest level SuperGrok Heavy subscription (which runs $300 / month), this research can quickly use up 50% of the weekly usage in just 2 days.

It would be truly spectacular if Grok Bot could take over the repetitive Tech News research duties… saving me over 20 hours per week would be amazing.

The biggest obstacle to saving me that time… is that pesky “Weekly usage” limit. If that were to increase by 2.5X, it would be definitely viable.

But, even at the current usage limits… it still could save me significant time by offloading the research onto the bots for a few days per week.

Color me impressed. I didn’t want to like these bots… but, a few issues aside, [at]Bot is proving to be highly beneficial for this work.

The futility of Ad-Blockers

Ads are filling the entirety of the Web -- websites, podcasts, YouTube videos, etc. -- at an increasing rate. Prices for those ad placements are plummeting. Consumers are desperate to use ad-blockers to make the web palatable. Google (and others) are desperate to break and block ad-blockers. All of which results in... more ads and lower pay for creators.

It's a fascinatingly annoying cycle. And there's only one viable way out of it.

Those in power with openSUSE make it clear they will not allow me anywhere near anything related to the openSUSE project. Ever. For any reason.

Well, that settles that, then! Guess I won't be contributing to openSUSE! 🤣

New iPhone? Yes Please. The Duo folding Phone? Not a chance

Resident Apple Fanboy here.

Do I want the new 18 Pro Max? Yes, yes I do. I upgrade approx ever 2 to 3 years and it's the camera improvement that typically drives my decision. This is a nice camera upgrade with aperture and 48mp.

My iPhone is already ridiculously performant but now we have on device AI to think about - so I'd love to have the new chip.

The new Apple Watch looks nice as mine is very long in the tooth (5 years old).

My AirPods Pro Gen 2 are just fine and I don't think they announced a new version.

Now for the Duo - not a chance. Doesn't have the 3 cameras - extremely pricey and you KNOW it's going to be fragile. Maybe the best ever so far of that type of folding phone, but I don't have the kind of money to NOT CARE about obviously fragility in a very expensive phone.

Do I like a small tablet? Yes. And I have one, the iPad mini. I'd rather have a phone and a tablet than a phone/tablet combo. I upgrade my...

Some AI researchers believe that the growth of AI could lead to the end of us all. Every power plant, smart device, and water plant could malfunction, break, explode, poison us, or even give separate instructions to numerous people to accomplish a nefarious purpose of a truly bad actor.

Coxon warned that those building AI sincerely believe the technology could kill all of humanity by the decade’s end, and said that it’s not a “marketing stunt.”
Several other leading AI researchers, including Anthropic’s Evan Hubinger, agreed with Coxon that the technology could pose a doomsday threat if left unchecked.
Weeks later, a partnership of intelligence agencies from the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand warned that AI models could breach and overwhelm the cybersecurity defenses of governments and businesses worldwide within months.

Lunduke Lifetime Discount Ends in 1 Day; Zelda, Larry, SQ, & Keen Walls Available

TL;DR: Lifetime Subscription discount ends in one day. There are currently 4 “Lifetime Walls” with space available for more names (the Oregon Trail Wall is now full).

We’ve been running a massive discount on Lunduke Journal Lifetime Subscriptions for the entire months of June and July. And it has been an absolute blast. There are now 21 (twenty-one!) retro computer walls overflowing with your names.

Pure insanity. Huge thank you to everyone who has supported The Lunduke Journal.

But the discounted price only runs through July 31st… and that moment is just about here.

When the calendar ticks over into August (just a hair over 24 hours from now), the Lunduke Journal Lifetime Subscription price goes back to normal.

  • If the calendar still says it’s July, the Lifetime price is still discounted to $125.

  • If the calendar says August… the price returns to $300.

There are, as of this exact moment, 4 retro game themed “Lifetime Walls” which still have some space for more names (check Lunduke.com for the full list):

  1. Legend of Zelda

  2. Commander Keen 4

  3. Space Quest 4

  4. Leisure Suit Larry

Grab a discounted Lifetime Subscription (scroll down for the details), then email Lunduke (bryan at lunduke.com) with which Wall you’d like to appear on.

First come, first served. Once a Wall is full, it’s full. So if there’s a specific Wall you’d like to be on, don’t dilly dally.

How to Grab a Discounted Lifetime Subscription:

There are 3 different ways to pick up a Lunduke Journal Lifetime sub. All of them work great. Choose whichever works best for you!

Remember: These discounted prices go back up to normal ($300) on August 1st.

Get a Lifetime Subscription via Locals:

  2. Select “Give Once“.

  3. Enter “125“ into the amount field.

  4. After checking out, Lunduke will toss you an email once your account is set to full lifetime status. (This usually happens within a few hours.)

Holy frijoles! There are now 20 (twenty!) Lifetime Subscriber Walls, filled with the names of roughly one bazillion Lunduke Journal supporters.

Just amazing.

Two super quick updates:

  1. The “Desqview/X”, “NeXTSetp”, & “TRS-80 Model 100” Walls are now full! (Check them out on Lunduke.com and at the end of new shows.)

  2. There are 3 new Walls available to put your John Hancock on… and, just for kicks, these ones aren’t from Classic Operating Systems… they’re Classic Games:

    1. Oregon Trail

    2. Commander Keen 4

I don’t expect space on these Walls to last long. First come first served.

A huge thank you to all of The Lunduke Journal subscribers. Your support is deeply appreciated. You make this possible.

TRS-80 Model 100 joins The Lunduke Journal Lifetime Wall party!

Buckle up, Buttercup. Because The Lunduke Journal is about to blow your mind.

  1. The “BeOS” Wall Lifetime Subscriber Wall is now full (see all of them on Lunduke.com)!

  2. We’ve added a new “TRS-80 Model 100” Wall (because we can)! That’s the 19th Lifetime Subscriber Wall! 19!

  3. The discounted Lifetime Lunduke Journal Subscriptions are still available through to the end of this month (July).

Which means there are, as of this exact moment, 4 Walls with space available (see Lunduke.com for the full list of Walls). But these fill up wicked fast.

  1. Emacs (only a few spots left)

  2. Desqview/X (a little less than 2/3rd’s full)

  3. NeXTStep (still plenty of space)

  4. TRS-80 Model 100 (just launched)

Nice, right?

Worth noting: The “TRS-80 Model 100” has very limited screen resolution (240 x 64), which means only a small number of names can fit on that wall. If you want on it, I’d let me know right away.

Grab a discounted Lifetime Subscription (if you don’t already have one), then let me know (email “bryan at lunduke.com”) which Wall you’d like to see your name on.

Huge high five to everyone who has already added their name to a Wall. At the current rate, we’ll have over 20 retro computer themed walls, filled with all of your names, by the end of the month.

And, doggone it, that’s amazing.
