Mythos released as Fable 5 - thoughts
Let’s focus on the price. Yes this is the new top model until next week or month.
By someone else. It’s very expensive. So expensive that they are only releasing it via subscription for a couple weeks. After that, it’s API pricing only. This thing will rack up bills in the hundred to thousands PER WEEk. And be worth it for some.
It’s like with employees. You can hire a fresher right out of college and pay them far less than you pay me. And there are various levels in between. In my area of expertise, there really doesn’t exist clients who don’t want my expertise. It’s a question of matching up with a companies budget priorities and my level of skill and experience. All the time I have companies interview me, love me, but choose to go with someone “not as good or as experienced” but more affordable. That’s life as it should be.
We are going to see this in AI. $20/mo for the smartest AI that exists….$200/mo for 20x the use…is going to morph into something much more like human employees.
I spent a month playing with Kimi K 2.6 - model. It’s an open weights model and using it to code all day long every day - it’s quite cost effective when compared to Anthropic or OpenAI. Is it AS Good? No. Was it worth $40/mo for code all day every day use? Yes.
I’d pair it with either a $20/mo Claude or Open AI subscription and use those for design, architecture and code review.
We are long past “are these models good enough to code”. We are entering the “just how good of a model does this project/task need”.
Right now I’m paying $100/mo for both ChatGPT and Claude. I use more than the $20/mo but I’m far from maxing out the $100 tier. When they added the ability to control my computer they became “employees for rent for $100/months”.
The day will come when the subscriptions are pulled and we are all paying per use via API. Those of us who have benefitted from this period will be faced with “I know Claude is super smart, but I’m going with xyz model because it’s good enough”.
The rate of improvement is still rapid. I hear so many good things about Composer 2.5 that Cursors has put out and it’s quite cost effective. They took Kiki 2”5 and tuned it more with the benefit of all the data they have on code. I look forward to the output that will come from xAI and Cursor.
Will I be using Fable 5? Sure, for the next 2 weeks on the most important stuff since I already have a subscription. After that? Not unless a client has a need and they pay for it.
The price of AI is actually going down at a great clip. It’s just hidden because of the subscription prices from OpenAI and Anthropic which is basically subsidized rates.
I say it feels like I have AI employees. It’s going to feel even more so when I start having to decide how expensive of an AI employee do I need for this task.
