The futility of Ad-Blockers

Ads are filling the entirety of the Web -- websites, podcasts, YouTube videos, etc. -- at an increasing rate. Prices for those ad placements are plummeting. Consumers are desperate to use ad-blockers to make the web palatable. Google (and others) are desperate to break and block ad-blockers. All of which results in... more ads and lower pay for creators.

It's a fascinatingly annoying cycle. And there's only one viable way out of it.

openSUSE says "No Lunduke allowed!"

Those in power with openSUSE make it clear they will not allow me anywhere near anything related to the openSUSE project. Ever. For any reason.

Well, that settles that, then! Guess I won't be contributing to openSUSE! 🤣

I am kind of tired of software being controlled by raving lunatics and so I decided to try to be a bit more proactive about it. Omarchy has gotten me to develop a few things for Linux so far. I think they are valuable contributions in their own right but I think my Word or LibreOffice Writer alternative here is not too shabby while still pretty early in development.

I call it MattWord. Right now it can print, open and save documents, page setup with margins, can work with images inserted in line with the document, and has spell checking. The saving and loading functionality works with documents as HTML files. I am using this for ease of development but also because it is pretty easy to convert HTML files into other formats which will come down the road. I will be targeting doc and docx. Spell checking is also a bit unique. It will show you a word that is misspelled but does give you suggestions. You need to know how to spell the word correctly. I am doing this for me. I think it is good ...

Well this week has been a fantastic week for my son and his journey through #endof10

He decided he wanted to move to Linux as he didn't want Windows 11 and his Windows 10 was going EOL on Oct 14th.

He took his time choosing the right distro but ended up on #CachyOS for his computer, and so I helped him set it up and show him how to do some basic things like installing/uninstalling programs, I installed some programs he uses like Discord, Steam, Brave Browser, showed him how to import all of his bookmarks and saved passwords etc, and then set up Bitwarden for him to keep his saved passwords secure in my self hosted Bitwarden vault.

He's been using it for a couple of days now and so far I have had no complaints from him, I don't think I would anyway, he's eager to be fully transitioned over to #Linux and with the #KDEPlasma desktop environment we chose to use, I think he will be absolutely fine.

It feels like a great win for us, he was always solid into the Windows corner due to ...

The Asymptotic Line of the Lifetime Lunduke Subscription
(Visualized with the power of spreadsheets and charts.)

The Lunduke Journal’s World Famous Lifetime Subscription (tm) was introduced 3 years, 3 months ago.

Every day that passes, the value of that Lifetime Subscription gets better and better. Like any good asymptotic line, it steadily approaches 0 (but never quite gets there).

Let’s do some math!

At that price, the cost “Per Month” of a Lifetime Subscription, after 39 months, is $3.85.

By 39 months after that, the “cost” goes down to $1.92. And it keeps getting closer to zero. Every month. Heck. Every day.

(Even at the regular price, the value of a Lifetime Subscription is a sweet asymptotic line. But discounts are doubly good.)

Now. I’m just going to throw a few nuggets of information at you. Do with them what you will.

  • Lunduke has been publishing Open Source & Tech News since 2006 (almost 20 years) and I’m still getting warmed up.

  • The Lunduke Journal Lifetime Subscription has been around for over 3 years already.

Based on that, sure does look like good odds that Lunduke is going to be doing this sort of reporting for a very, very long time. Which makes the Lifetime Subscription a safe bet.

Plus… and I’m no Math-a-tologist (tm), but… it seems to me like the earlier a person picks up a Lifetime Subscription, the better the deal gets.

My suggestion?

  1. Grab a Lifetime Subscription at the discounted price before midnight (because saving money is good).

  2. Enjoy the perks (like forum access and the downloadable shows and books).

  3. Never need to worry about paying for a monthly subscription again.

  4. High five yourself every month, as the “Cost Per Month” of your Lifetime Subscription steadily moves towards 0.

Again… do it before midnight tonight (Sunday, October 12th), when the price goes back to normal.

But that’s just a suggestion. If you’d prefer to pay a fixed rate, every month, which never approaches zero (like a totally awesome asymptotic line)… that’s ok too. 😎

50% Off Everything at The Lunduke Journal through Sunday
We experimented with doing away with "sales" during September. That didn't work. So here's a massive sale to keep The Lunduke Journal's lights on.

In September, The Lunduke Journal attempted an experiment: Run no discount sales all month long and see what happens.

The result? The Lunduke Journal made a whole lot less money! So much so that, if we kept doing that, we’d go out of business. Surprise!

Let’s drop that idea in the “Welp, that didn’t work!” bucket.

In order to make up for the month of lost revenue — and make sure The Lunduke Journal can continue operating 100% free from any influence of Big Tech, just as we have for the last several years — we’re going to run a massive discount sale all weekend long.

50% off. Everything. Monthly, Yearly, & Lifetime.

All of the following discounts come with all of the perks (MP4 Downloads, Forum access, and eBooks) and are available through Sunday, October 12th.

Note: If you picked up a subscription over the last few days, you will be contacted and offered the 50% off discounted price to be applied retroactively. Because I like you. And you’re awesome.

50% Off Yearly or Monthly Subscription:

Available via both Locals and Substack. (This includes full access the community Forum, and all other perks.)

That means $3 / Month. Or $27 / Year (which works out to $2.25 / Month).

Via Lunduke.Locals.com:

Via Lunduke.Substack.com:

Note: You can also grab a Monthly subscription via X, YouTube, or Patreon. There’s no way to offer a discount on those platforms. But those are still good options!

The Famous Lifetime Subscription:

The “World Famous Lunduke Journal Lifetime Subscription” is exactly what it sounds like. Pay once and get full access to The Lunduke Journal. For life.

Now, through Saturday, October 12th, you can snag one at a crazy discount. Normally these are $300… but you can grab one for $150. (You can also pay more if you’d like to donate a little extra.)

The Lifetime Subscription can be obtained via Locals, Substack, or using Bitcoin. All three options work great and are super easy (& all three include access to all of the perks). Scroll down and choose your option.

Note: The Lifetime Subscription only applies to Substack and Locals. Other platforms (such as X, Patreon, & YouTube) do not provide the functionality necessary to create Lifetime Subscriptions.

How to get a Lifetime Subscription via Locals:

  1. Go to Lunduke.Locals.com/support.

  2. Select “Give Once“.

  3. Enter “150“ (or more) into the amount field.

  4. After checking out, Lunduke will toss you an email once your account is set to full lifetime status. (This usually happens within a few hours.)

How to get a Lifetime Subscription via Substack:

  1. Go to Lunduke.Substack.com/subscribe.

  2. Select the “Lifetime Subscription” option.

  3. After checking out, Lunduke will toss you an email once your account is set to full lifetime status. (This usually happens within a few hours.)

If you would also like full, Lifetime access to Lunduke.Locals.com (which is included):

  1. Make a free account on Lunduke.Locals.com.

  2. Email “bryan at lunduke.com” with the email address you use on both Substack and Locals (can be different email addresses).

  3. Lunduke will toss you an email once your account is set to full lifetime status on Locals.

How to get a Lifetime Subscription with Bitcoin:

You can also obtain a Lifetime Subscription via Bitcoin.

bc1qyjakve8fywm8pz2v99v57yhjj0vzr2vjze6fcq

  • Email “bryan at lunduke.com” with the following information: What time you made the transaction, how much was sent (in Bitcoin), and the email address you use (or plan to use) on Locals.com or Substack.com (or both).

No matter which type of subscription you choose, thank you for your support! Every subscription goes directly towards keeping The Lunduke Journal running well into the future.

Lunduke Journal subscription for only $3 per month? NOICE.

Help The Lunduke Journal celebrate having over 11 Million views last month by picking up a subscription at 50% off!

Then head over to the super-duper, mega-radical “Lunduke Journal Subscriber Perks” page and see all of the goodies you get for being a supporter of Indie Tech Journalism: Access to the Exclusive Forum (tm), DRM-Free MP4 downloads of all of the shows (tm), and a bunch of PDF eBooks (also tm).

The 50% off — which includes Monthly, Yearly, and Lifetime subscriptions — is good through end of the day Sunday, October 11th (that’s tomorrow).

That means you can get a Monthly sub for $3. That’s nuts.

Or, if you get the Yearly for $27, that works out to $2 dollars and 25 cents per month. Double nuts.

I won’t even do the math on what a good deal the 50% off Lifetime Subscription is. Technically it last forever. That’s a subscription for… infinity months.

Which means, as time goes on, the cost per month — for a Lifetime Sub — approaches 0 like an asymptotic line determined to give you a good deal.

You’re welcome.
