Holdout log entry: 2024-01-02T10:43:15+0100

Yesterday the MegaCorp logged me out. I thought they were playing the hardest they could and have already lost hope I'll be able to skirt their unreasonable demands. But then when I logged in today, I was merely greeted with the exact same popup as before. It even had the "remind me later" button in the same place as before. As it stands, I'll be able to enjoy at least some more of the sweet freedom unmolested.

The futility of Ad-Blockers

Ads are filling the entirety of the Web -- websites, podcasts, YouTube videos, etc. -- at an increasing rate. Prices for those ad placements are plummeting. Consumers are desperate to use ad-blockers to make the web palatable. Google (and others) are desperate to break and block ad-blockers. All of which results in... more ads and lower pay for creators.

It's a fascinatingly annoying cycle. And there's only one viable way out of it.

openSUSE says "No Lunduke allowed!"

Those in power with openSUSE make it clear they will not allow me anywhere near anything related to the openSUSE project. Ever. For any reason.

Well, that settles that, then! Guess I won't be contributing to openSUSE! 🤣

"Andreas Kling creator of Serenity OS & Ladybird Web Browser" - Lunduke’s Big Tech Show - September 13th, 2023 - Ep 044

CHAT-bot.

It’s right in the name. A program that you can have a conversation with.

Yes, I have been enjoying all manner of conversations with AI chat bots. Talks about music, science, philosophy, health, science fiction. Whenever I’m in the mood to talk and my friends and family are busy, I can spin up a chatbot.

I view it as a form of self talk. It can be quite engaging if you give it a chance.

But what about Big Tech and privacy? Who wants their personal thoughts fed back into the LLM and leaked out to others? And what about manipulation?

Well, enter the locallly running LLM that are open source. These models are good and perform decently on “normal people hardware”. Not “Chromebook” level, but a $400 mini PC or the $600 M4 Mac mini can run these models well.

Here is a conversation that I had with Llama 3.2 3Billion parameter model. The performance was near ChatGPT speed, faster than ChatGPT was 2 years ago.

A chat about ELO and the influence of the Beatles.

...

I burned sooo many hours banging out code on my TI-81 back in the day. '92 College of the Redwoods required graphing calculators for classes, and that was a critical, I discovered, aspect that allowed me to understand calculus somewhat better than I had when it was taught only symbolically.

in a round-about way, while looking up things scriptable in #Lua, I happen upon
where these TI calculators have gone since. I'm not sure I'd love packing all that new stuff into these devices, but I'm not sure I wouldn't, either.

I'd just like to say...

Somewhere back in time, some guy or gal pulled some red berries off a bush in the mountains, decided to roast them till they were almost black, crush them to gritty power and make a tea with it. They called it coffee.

I would like to posthumously award this unknown hero. This may not be space flight, or artificial intelligence, but I would say it has positively affected many, many more. It is truly one of the greatest inventions in the history of the world. As I tilt this cup to my lips, I want to say,

WELL DONE! WELL DONE INDEED! 🎈🎆🎇🎈

No shows Dec 24th, 25th. Lifetime subs available through 26th.

A massive Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah to everyone!

This year the start of Hanukkah lines up nicely with Christmas (starting on sundown, Christmas Day) -- so I'm taking off the 24th and 25th (in honor of Christmas -- and to prepare of Hanukkah).  Regular Lunduke Journal Shenanigans (tm) will resume on Thursday, December 26th.

I love the years when Hanukkah and Christmas are at roughly the same time.  Because the Jewish year is on a lunar calendar -- sometimes that means Hanukkah starts as early as the end of November.  Hanukkah right after Thanksgiving?  Still a lot of fun, but not ideal.

For me, Hanukkah starting at sundown on Christmas Day is just perfect.  Lets each holiday shine and compliment each other.

Also: A huge thank you to everyone who has subscribed or donated to The Lunduke Journal this month.  Because of you we have almost accomplished our funding goal... for next month.  We're sitting around 80% or so.  How sweet is that?

That is one heck of a fantastic holiday gift for me -- as it means I may not need to worry about running any promotions or fundraising during the entire month of January.

Less time worrying about boring business stuff, more time doing the fun Tech reporting I love.  A great way to go into Christmas, Hanukkah, and New Years.

If anyone feels like pushing us over the line (zero pressure)... I'm keeping the Lunduke Journal Lifetime Subscription available through the 26th.  If you want one (for yourself or as a gift), feel free to snag one.  They're awesome.

Either way, you rule.  Enjoy whichever holiday you celebrate.

Eat something yummy.  Do something nerdy.  You deserve it.
