The futility of Ad-Blockers

Ads are filling the entirety of the Web -- websites, podcasts, YouTube videos, etc. -- at an increasing rate. Prices for those ad placements are plummeting. Consumers are desperate to use ad-blockers to make the web palatable. Google (and others) are desperate to break and block ad-blockers. All of which results in... more ads and lower pay for creators.

It's a fascinatingly annoying cycle. And there's only one viable way out of it.

openSUSE says "No Lunduke allowed!"

Those in power with openSUSE make it clear they will not allow me anywhere near anything related to the openSUSE project. Ever. For any reason.

Well, that settles that, then! Guess I won't be contributing to openSUSE! 🤣

"Andreas Kling creator of Serenity OS & Ladybird Web Browser" - Lunduke’s Big Tech Show - September 13th, 2023 - Ep 044

Cell networks finally settled down enough to post an update. We got hit by Helene pretty hard last night and this morning. Thankfully, our home and property sustained comparably little damage, but the neighbors and the rest of town are in rough shape. Trees down all over the place. Pretty much the entire county is without power and with a dam failing up on the border they are evacuating people all along the river basin. Thankfully that’s not us but I’m sure that’ll impact a lot of people.

I’m trying to conserve battery life so I doubt I’ll be on much. If you’re the praying type, I’d appreciate prayers from my family and our community. We’ve got a ton of line workers from multiple states out trying to restore the power, but the power company is saying it’ll be days if not weeks before everything is back up. Thankfully Lowe’s had a generator so they were open with pallets of water and Gatorade, but the closest grocery store with power was a Walmart that was 40 ...

well... I didn't want to print anyway.
I noticed update to a batch of cups system updates in the Kubuntu update I did this morning. I thought, "that was quick." but, I come back later and wake up the machine and notice before long that a couple cores were pegged at 100%. At first I figure some errant web page.... close 'em all. then konsole and top shows cups-browsed at the top.

sudo apt remove cups*

to let things sort them out.

Real-Time Linux! Dystopian AI Future! Fake AI Podcasts! Exploding Pagers!

If you only have time for two shows, check out the "Real-Time Linux" and "FreeCAD" episodes.  Some seriously fun, good news for Linux in there.

But, boy-howdy, outside of Linux... there was some seriously funky news this week.  Especially when it comes to AI shenanigans.  Fake AI Podcasts, AI used to brainwash people, AI surveillance... pretty weird and dark stuff.  All of the AI stories are worth checking out.
