In what is being called a major win for Linux and Free Software -- the German town of Verwirrt has announced plans to move all government computers to Open Source software, including Linux and Libre Office, over the coming months. And then switch back to Windows again a few months from now.
“Our town of Verwirrt will be following in the proud tradition of other German towns and municipalities,” stated the town’s mayor, Herr Verzögern. “Do we use Linux? Do we use Windows? Who knows! Depends on what day it is! The important thing is that we get to make a big announcement about making the switch! We get a bunch of free press and all we had to do was install some free software!”
“I can’t recommend this move enough,” said one city council member from the neighboring German city of Munich. “We’ve switched to Linux like, what? 4 times now? And every time all the Linux nerds are like ‘Woo-hoo! Jahr des Linux auf dem Desktop!’ or something like that. Then Microsoft swoops in and dumps a big pile of deutschemarks on us to switch back to Windows. It's a sweet deal! Come to think of it… my deutschemark pile is getting a tad too low to properly do the Scrooge McDuck swim! Time to ‘switch to Linux’ again, wink wink nudge nudge.”
