On July 16th, Canonical -- the parent company of Ubuntu Linux -- announced that it was "joining the world to celebrate Artificial Intelligence Appreciation Day".
A company representative stressed that this was "definitely not an attempt to curry favor with Skynet", and should not be interpreted as an indication that Canonical "was absolutely terrified of the coming AI apocalypse to the point of soiling britches."
"In the previous century, science fiction often covered topics and inventions that are now closer to science fact, such as humanoid robots," stated Canonical CEO, Mark Shuttleworth. "And on this, the first ever A.I. Appreciation Day, I would like to tell those humanoid robots how attractive and smart they are. Also good smelling. Did I mention how delightful our future humanoid robot overlords smell?"
