11 Hours left! How to keep getting The Lunduke Journal.
May 15, 2023

Apologies to all the amazing Locals subscribers who are already set up.  I've got to make sure everyone gets this message so I'm repeating myself a lot today.  It's super critical.  The good news: These reminders end at midnight!  🤣

We’ve only got 11 hours left in the great Substack to Locals migration of The Lunduke Journal!

After Midnight tonight (Monday, May 15th):

  • All new content (articles, podcasts, videos, live shows, PDFs, etc.) will be exclusively posted to Lunduke.Locals.com.

  • No new Lifetime subscriptions will be offered.

  • The current (massive) discount on subscriptions will end.

If you already have a subscription over at Lunduke.Locals.com… you’re all set! You can safely remove your Substack account and you will get all new content over on Locals!

Don’t have a Locals subscription yet? Read on, my nerds!

Easy steps to make sure you don’t miss out:

  1. Create an account on Lunduke.Locals.com (if you haven’t already).

  2. If you already have a Founding Member or Lifetime Subscription via Substack:

    1. Email [email protected] and let me know. I will set your account on Locals to full access.

  3. If you are a monthly or free subscriber via Substack… pick a new subscription option:

    1. Free Lunduke.Locals.com subscription — Only get free articles, can’t post, can’t comment, no live events.

    2. Monthly Lunduke.Locals.com subscription — Full access to absolutely everything on Lunduke.Locals.com. All articles, podcasts, live events, and can make posts/comments.

    3. Yearly Lunduke.Locals.com subscription — Same as monthly… but for a full year. Discounted with 2 free months.

    4. Yearly Founding Member subscription — Same as Yearly… but also includes full access to NerdyEntertainment.Locals.com and ConservativeNerds.Locals.com.

    5. Lifetime subscription — Same as Founding Member… but for life. Pay once and never pay again.

  4. Once your Locals account is all setup… you can safely unsubscribe (or disable emails) on Substack. You’ll now be getting everything from Locals.

  5. Bonus: Grab the Locals iOS or Android app. This allows you to have full access to all content from The Lunduke Journal using the same account as on the Locals website.

Again: Until midnight the following (massive) discounts are in effect:

  • The Yearly Founding Member Subscription — Discounted to $75 for a full year. ($6.25 per month for three communities / publications? Awesome.)

  • The Lifetime Founding Member Subscription — Discounted to $120… for life. That’s insane. Never pay again and get access to every part of The Lunduke Journal forever.

Go here for exact (simple) instructions on taking advantage of the deal.

https://lunduke.locals.com/post/3992170/discounts-on-locals-subscriptions-ends-monday

If you have questions simply email [email protected], or you can ask on Locals or via Substack Chat. I’m here to help.

The futility of Ad-Blockers

Ads are filling the entirety of the Web -- websites, podcasts, YouTube videos, etc. -- at an increasing rate. Prices for those ad placements are plummeting. Consumers are desperate to use ad-blockers to make the web palatable. Google (and others) are desperate to break and block ad-blockers. All of which results in... more ads and lower pay for creators.

It's a fascinatingly annoying cycle. And there's only one viable way out of it.

openSUSE says "No Lunduke allowed!"

Those in power with openSUSE make it clear they will not allow me anywhere near anything related to the openSUSE project. Ever. For any reason.

Well, that settles that, then! Guess I won't be contributing to openSUSE! 🤣

Building My Fake Staff - Who Now How Build Each Other

I’m debugging three AI systems that are all under active development… at the same time.

  • Autonomous Goal — my autonomous employee that wakes up and works toward long-term goals.
  • “Gosh Durn It, Do What I Say” Orchestrator — the orchestration engine that makes sure LLMs actually follow instructions instead of getting creative at the wrong time. (Yes, that’s really what I call it.)
  • The actual mission project they’re working on.

I’m running Codex on Linux for this.

Each layer is complex.
Each layer is changing.
Each layer can be the source of the next failure.

Eventually I got tired of playing whack-a-mole. So I gave Codex one instruction:
Run the Autonomous Goal service. If it fails, determine which layer is actually at fault. Fix it. Run again. Repeat until everything works. Then summarize what you found and fixed.

And then…I stopped typing.

For the last couple of hours it’s been doing exactly that. It has been preserving evidence,...

Lunduke's Week in Tech : June 28 - July 4, 2026

Lunduke’s Thoughts of The Week

Yesterday was the 4th of July.

As such, time that I normally would have spent writing up some thoughts on the Tech News of the Week (tm) was, instead, spent eating hamburgers, watching fireworks, and generally goofing off with my kids.

So allow me to briefly summarize my thoughts using as little effort as possible:

Rust is weird, Sony sucks, and America is awesome.

… Yup. That just about covers it.

I hope all of my fellow Americans had a truly splendid Independence Day.

Biggest Tech Stories - June 28 - July 4, 2026

Here are the major stories from the last week, with direct links to X and Substack.

See Lunduke.com for all other platforms (Rumble, RSS Audio Podcast, etc.).

  • Git Takes Another Step Towards Making Rust Mandatory (X, Substack)

  • 74 Million User Accounts Exposed in Breaches During June (X, Substack)

  • BCacheFS Adding Rust Dependency Even Though “Rust doesn’t have a stable ABI” (X, Substack)

  • Git Without Rust From Dev of XLibre (X, Substack)

  • Sony Says No More Physical PlayStation Games (X, Substack)

  • Ubuntu Sponsors Rust Clone Foundation (X, Substack)

  • Like Computers? Thank America. (X, Substack)

Huge thank you to all of The Lunduke Journal’s subscribers. You make all of this possible.

Last call for Emacs & Vim Walls!

The “Emacs” & “Vim” Lunduke Journal Lifetime Subscriber Walls are on track to be full some time tomorrow (Monday) afternoon!

If you want to get your name on one of these, chop chop!

As soon as these Walls are full, I will update Lunduke.com (check the bottom) and send out the final result.

Will “Emacs” or “Vim” be the first to fill up?

I’ll let you in on a secret: It’s going to be very close.

  • So if you already have a Lifetime Subscription (and are not on any other Lifetime Wall), email me (bryan at lunduke.com) and let me know which Wall you want to be listed on.

  • Or grab a new Lifetime Subscription (scroll down, the details are below). They’re mega discounted and it takes 60 seconds.

Either way. You’ve gotta move quick to get on one of those two Walls.

How to Grab a Discounted Lifetime Subscription:

Through the end of July, Lifetime Subscriptions are only $125 (regularly $300).

And you only pay once. For life. Which means that every month, the “cost per month” gets lower and lower. Save money, and show your support for The Lunduke Journal at the same time. Win-win.

There are 3 different ways to pick up a Lunduke Journal Lifetime sub (Substack, Locals, & Bitcoin). All of them work great and are listed below. Choose whichever is easiest for you!

Get a Lifetime Subscription via Locals:

  1. Go to Lunduke.Locals.com/support.

  2. Select “Give Once“.

  3. Enter “125“ into the amount field.

  4. After checking out, Lunduke will toss you an email once your account is set to full lifetime status. (This usually happens within a few hours.)

Get a Lifetime Subscription via Substack:

  1. Go to Lunduke.Substack.com/subscribe.

  2. Select the “Lifetime Subscription” option.

  3. After checking out, Lunduke will toss you an email once your account is set to full lifetime status. (This usually happens within a few hours.)

If you would also like full, Lifetime access to Lunduke.Locals.com (which is included):

  1. Make a free account on Lunduke.Locals.com.

  2. Email “bryan at lunduke.com” with the email address you use on both Substack and Locals (can be different email addresses).

  3. Lunduke will toss you an email once your account is set to full lifetime status on Locals.

Get a Lifetime Subscription with Bitcoin:

Bonus: Save an extra $10 with the Bitcoin option, as Bitcoin processing has fewer fees associated with it.

  • Email “bryan at lunduke.com” with the following information: What time you made the transaction, how much was sent (in Bitcoin), and the email address you use (or plan to use) on Locals.com or Substack.com.

  1. The Emacs” and “Vim” Lifetime Subscriber Walls are almost full! Which one will be completed first? I expect to announce the victor some time this weekend! If you want to be sure your name gets onto either “Emacs” or “Vim”, let me know very quickly. Like… today.

  1. The “Desqview/X” Wall (aka “Wall 17”) launched a few days ago and is off to an awesome start. The first request to add a name to “Desqview/X” arrived literally 2 minutes after I posted it.
