What someone can learn from your Image EXIF Metadata, and how to secure your photos

Hypothetical:

Today is your son's 8th birthday party. You used your smartphone to take an amazing picture of him blowing out the candles on his cake.

You then share that picture with family and friends. Maybe via email. Maybe via some social media.

Based on that picture -- and that picture alone -- what information are you, perhaps unknowingly, sharing with others?

Inside each picture you take is a small mountain of data -- known as EXIF data -- that is made openly available to everyone. And some of it is pretty gosh-darned personal.

Let's go over what that data is, what a potential eavesdropper can learn, and how to minimize the risk when sharing pictures with others.

Google Accuses Microsoft of "Dark Patterns" with Edge Browser on Windows

The company that pre-loads Chrome on Android, and makes ChromeOS, says Microsoft is "Dark" for pre-loading Edge on Windows. To make this case, they've formed "Browser Choice Alliance" with Opera & Vivaldi.

Interestingly: Apple Safari, Mozilla Firefox, & Brave are not involved.

The futility of Ad-Blockers

Ads are filling the entirety of the Web -- websites, podcasts, YouTube videos, etc. -- at an increasing rate. Prices for those ad placements are plummeting. Consumers are desperate to use ad-blockers to make the web palatable. Google (and others) are desperate to break and block ad-blockers. All of which results in... more ads and lower pay for creators.

It's a fascinatingly annoying cycle. And there's only one viable way out of it.
