Lunduke Journal April Wrap-up
A commitment to no ads, live streaming on the way, & April PDF Magazine.
April 30, 2023

April was an awesome month here at The Lunduke Journal. And the month ahead is shaping up to be even better.

Here’s a quick end-of-the-month wrap up: The new monthly PDF is available, Lunduke’s favorite articles from April, Live-streaming coming to The Big Sunday Tech Show… and The Lunduke Journal is now the tech publication with the least amount of ads or promotions (by far).

Which is rad.

No Ads. And only one day of promotion per month.

The Lunduke Journal is pretty gosh darned unique in the Tech Publication world:

  • We never run any advertisements

  • We never take a single penny from Big Tech

Cool, right? It means we are never influenced by any tech company. Let’s take that a step further by standardizing on this:

  • No promos in all podcasts

  • Minimal links at the end of all articles

  • Only have promotions or sales one day per month

In fact, if you’ve been listening to the recent podcasts (and the Big Sunday Show), you know that there are already almost zero bits of promotion in Lunduke Journal shows. Which is awesome.

In essence, The Lunduke Journal now has less of anything “promotion-y” than any major Tech Publication (or YouTube Channel… or Podcast…) in existence. And that is all thanks to all of you amazing subscribers. You’ve made this possible.

This was inspired by the absolute onslaught of advertisements we get bombarded with when reading most tech news sites. Overlays, banner ads, pop up ads… ads covering more of my screen than the actual articles. It’s insane. And it seems like most of the big podcasts and YouTube Tech channels aren’t much better. Let’s make The Lunduke Journal a sanctuary… a place where we can not be bombarded with 300 ads on every page.

Last Day of the Month: Lifetime Sub deal is beck for a day!

Only one day of sales or promotions? For a whole month?! Oh, boy. Well, shoot. Better make it good then!

Just for one day — April 30th — we’re temporarily bringing back the Lunduke Journal Lifetime Subscription… for $160.

A “Lifetime Subscription” comes with the same perks and benefits as the Founding Member Subscription… for life. Pay once… get full access every part of The Lunduke Journal (including Locals and Substack, all of the downloads)… forever. No need to ever pay again. Which is nifty.

To get a Lifetime Subscription:

  1. Go to Lunduke.Locals.com/support.

  2. Choose "Give Once".

  3. Enter "$160" (or more) in the amount field.

  4. You will then receive an email within 24 hours with details once your Lifetime account is all setup.

This is only available today — April 30th. Tomorrow, May 1st? The deal is gone.

There we go. Boom. There’s one sale for the month. Now enjoy the ad-free Lunduke Journal.

Lunduke’s Favorite Articles from April

There was a whole lot of good stuff happening during April — and here are my 6 favorite pieces (not including The Big Sunday Show):

  1. Microsoft & Google: "You'll have no real computers, and you'll be happy"

  2. The era of ad supported services is coming to an end (and that's a good thing).

  3. Why is Firefox called Firefox?

  4. Mozilla, OSI, & the memory-holing of Computer History

  5. The "Big Three" Linux companies ranked by Revenue, Employees, Kernel Contributions

  6. The Rust Foundation goes to war against people using the word "Rust"

Links for various Lunduke Journal stuff

There are oodles of places to get The Lunduke Journal of Technology. Here’s a few of them. Because links are handy.

That’s all for now! Thank you to everyone for a great April!

The futility of Ad-Blockers

Ads are filling the entirety of the Web -- websites, podcasts, YouTube videos, etc. -- at an increasing rate. Prices for those ad placements are plummeting. Consumers are desperate to use ad-blockers to make the web palatable. Google (and others) are desperate to break and block ad-blockers. All of which results in... more ads and lower pay for creators.

It's a fascinatingly annoying cycle. And there's only one viable way out of it.

openSUSE says "No Lunduke allowed!"

Those in power with openSUSE make it clear they will not allow me anywhere near anything related to the openSUSE project. Ever. For any reason.

Well, that settles that, then! Guess I won't be contributing to openSUSE! 🤣

BTW - I use Arch!

Never thought i'd say that. I'm more of a Linux Mint kind of person, but Omarchy looked so interesting.

My daughter's 2013 Macbook Air - that I spent good money for as her high school graduation present - is in perfect condition. It helps that she hasn't touched it in years. But seriously, this computer is mint. It's just 12 years old and Apple stopped supporting it with OS security update a year ago.

All my Macs will eventually be Linux machines. This is the first one. The installation went flawless.

I can't tell you much yet - as the VERY first thing I did was come here to inform you all -- that I use Arch ;)

Oh, and the caps lock button doesn't work. Weird. But the screen is beautiful - I don't know if it's Arch or Omarchy, but Chrome doesn't look "Linux Fugly" like normal.

Lunduke taking Veteran's Day off

Today, we honor our veterans and their service to our nation.

Great men, like my grandfather who, during World War II, joined the Navy at 14 years old. He was a big, older-looking teenager… so, as was not unheard of, he lied about his age on the paperwork in order to go fight the Axis.

And his father, who joined in the year leading up to the start of World War I.

I am taking this Veteran’s Day off. In part to spend time helping my children learn about their family’s US military history (which goes back, on multiple lines, to the very beginning of our nation). And in part… to watch one of the greatest movies ever made, The Great Escape. Because, hey, Steve McQueen and James Garner! Pretty sure my Grandpa would approve.

Lunduke Journal shows will resume tomorrow (and I’ve got an awesome one lined up).

In the meantime, if you haven’t watched yesterday’s DHH interview yet, highly recommended. Watch (or listen) to it anywhere you like.

And, in the grand tradition of “Veterans Day Sales”, I’ve extended the 50% off all Lunduke Journal subscriptions discount through this coming Friday. Because I can. Pretty sure my Grandpa would approve of that too.
