Reminder: BSD Week starts Wednesday (the 15th)!
February 14, 2023

From February 15th through 22nd we are going to be immersing ourselves in the wonderful world of BSD here at The Lunduke Journal of Technology!

I’ve been looking forward to BSD Week for quite a while!

I have a few articles in the pipe for the week — including “The History of BSD” (which is absolutely fascinating), “The History of vi” (a story that is deeply connected to BSD), along with some adventures into some of the weirder parts of the BSD world. Both old and new.

I’ll also be chronicling my attempts to use a few BSD systems over on Locals. Should be a ton of fun.

How to get the most out of BSD Week

While there will be a number of articles posted to Lunduke.Substack.com, you’ll want two things to really get the most out of the week:

  1. An account on Lunduke.Locals.com — this is where the community will be posting about their own adventures in BSD land (along with a number of Lunduke’s posts that won’t appear anywhere else).

  2. A full subscription to The Lunduke Journal of Technonolgy — some of the best articles will be only for full, paid subscribers.

If you’ve got those two things… you’re all set!

BSD Week will officially kick off at 8am (Eastern Time) on Wednesday morning — with a kickoff podcast and article. Though folks over on Lunduke.Locals.com have been getting ready for this one for quite some time!

You can participate in BSD Week in oh-so-many ways! Everything from installing and running a BSD variant on your own system… to simply lurking and enjoying the articles, podcasts, and posts from the community.

A little incentive in case you haven’t picked up your subscription yet

At the beginning of the month, the third publication in “The Lunduke Journal Triforce of Nerdiness” was announced, focusing on Nerdy Entertainment.

And, with it, the Lunduke Journal Founding Membership option was expanded to include full access to all three publications — including full access to both Substack and Locals.

This really is the best way to take full advantage of everything happening here in the world of The Lunduke Journal. To make it a bit easier to take the plunge — and help you to follow the fun — the price is reduced until the end of BSD Week.

From now until February 22nd at 8am (Eastern), the following discounts are in effect:

  • One Year of Founding Membership is $95 -- (Normally $125)

  • A Lifetime Membership is $295 -- (Normally $350)

Important Note: This is only available if you pick up the subscription via Locals.

To get a Founding Member Subscription:

  1. Go to Lunduke.Locals.com/subscription.

  2. Choose the "Annual" option.

  3. Enter "$95" in the amount field.

To get a Lifetime Subscription:

  1. Go to Lunduke.Locals.com/support.

  2. Choose "Give Once".

  3. Enter "$295" in the amount field.

Lunduke will then set your accounts to full access across the whole Lunduke Journal family of publications (it is a manual process, so give Lunduke a few hours to take care of it). And feel free to reach out at [email protected] if you have any questions or hit any snags.

The futility of Ad-Blockers

Ads are filling the entirety of the Web -- websites, podcasts, YouTube videos, etc. -- at an increasing rate. Prices for those ad placements are plummeting. Consumers are desperate to use ad-blockers to make the web palatable. Google (and others) are desperate to break and block ad-blockers. All of which results in... more ads and lower pay for creators.

It's a fascinatingly annoying cycle. And there's only one viable way out of it.

openSUSE says "No Lunduke allowed!"

Those in power with openSUSE make it clear they will not allow me anywhere near anything related to the openSUSE project. Ever. For any reason.

Well, that settles that, then! Guess I won't be contributing to openSUSE! 🤣

"Andreas Kling creator of Serenity OS & Ladybird Web Browser" - Lunduke’s Big Tech Show - September 13th, 2023 - Ep 044

@Lunduke hey, faithful Lifetime subscriber here. Is there anything fun in tech that you can report on good buddy? I love the episodes on all the dark-side of tech but a nice fun one would be a refreshing change.

I wish I had taken a screenshot of this as it was rather comical. Yesterday, doing a Google search for "mackie onyx24 24-channel mixer phantom power", the Gemini results tried to tell me that it supplies phantom power via the SD Card slot and USB-B port (which makes zero sense at all).

Then, when searching about an issue we are having with a specific model of LASER projector, Gemini was telling me about how to troubleshoot BULB issues with that particular model and how a known issue with bulbs could be behind the particular issue I am having... a model that has a LASER and not a BULB.

Really, quite comical, and quite illustrative of the limitations of AI technology in certain use cases. (Things like Notebook LM where it is drawing from specific source material: absolutely brilliant; things like the summaries in search results... rather hit or miss, although in fairness it does seem to be doing more hitting now than even a few months back).

Ladies… gentlemen… we’re one step closer…

Windows 98, NT4, and 2000 now have NVMe support.

Lunduke Journal Update: Nov 12, 2025

Just a few quick Lunduke Journal-y tidbits on this fine Wednesday afternoon!

  1. Two fascinating interviews this week: DHH and Preston Byrne (the attorney for 4chan). Both are worth catching if you haven’t already.

  2. The 50% off Subscriptions deal has been extended through this Friday (Nov 14th). So many of you kept picking up new subscriptions… I figured… what the heck! Why not keep the party going? So Monthly, Yearly, and Lifetime subs are all half off at least through Friday!

  3. The “Lifetime Subscriber Wall” isn’t part of today’s (November 12th) shows. There have been so many requests to be added to the wall this week that I need to update the design a bit to fit everybody. The Lifetime Wall will re-appear at the end of new shows tomorrow or Friday.

Once again, thank you for your support! None of this would be possible without you!
