Update, almost all the cleaning is done. The nicotine smell has mostly dissipated, or I've gone blind to it. I have scrubbed all the PCBs, scrubbed the plastics, and removed a lot of flux from the keyboard.
Quick question, before I forget... Am I going to have any issues if I only use disk drive 2?
This Laser drive, which is set to drive 1, is in BAD shape. There is rust all over the inside. Then to boot, the case is soldered together. So im going to have to desolder the whole thing, remove the motors and heads, soak it in vinegar, then treat it all with a clear coat, reassemble it, fix the timing, etc. I did not want to do all that. The Apple drive, on the other hand, is labeled drive 2. Its in great shape.
I know there is a solder joint someplace and I can make it drive 1, but then the label will be wrong and if I get the other drive working, im going to have to reverse it.
The keyboard has had some work done to it. A few key switches have been replaced (badly). Obviously, somebody has spilled something on here at some point.
All-in-all, I think its looking great. I knew I was going to be putting some elbow grease into this. And honestly, I've only spent about 1.5 hours on it between emails and meetings.
Tomorrow morning I have a long meeting, so I'm going to be listening and paying attention and putting all the keys back on the keyboard.
By the that time, everything should have had more than ample time to dry out so it should then be safe to power up. I'm psyched.
Pokemon Go using your phone camera to build a CIA-backed 3D Map AI system.
It sounds like an insane movie plot. But it's real.
In 2016, this was "Lunduke's crazy conspiracy theory about Pokemon Go being used to spy on everyone, backed by the CIA". Now, in 2024, Niantic Labs (the makers of Pokemon Go), proudly brags about using Pokemon Go to spy on you... and using that covertly obtained information to build a massive, 3D artificial intelligence mapping system of private spaces.
"We receive about 1 million fresh scans each week, each containing hundreds of discrete images."
In other words: Lunduke was right.

And that's only one impact of Google being officially ruled a monopoly.

Ads are filling the entirety of the Web -- websites, podcasts, YouTube videos, etc. -- at an increasing rate. Prices for those ad placements are plummeting. Consumers are desperate to use ad-blockers to make the web palatable. Google (and others) are desperate to break and block ad-blockers. All of which results in... more ads and lower pay for creators.
It's a fascinatingly annoying cycle. And there's only one viable way out of it.

Those in power with openSUSE make it clear they will not allow me anywhere near anything related to the openSUSE project. Ever. For any reason.
Well, that settles that, then! Guess I won't be contributing to openSUSE! 🤣

There was some interesting news this week in the world of computing.
But the only one I can think about is NOTEPAD.EXE getting Artificial Intelligence.
I mean. What the fart?!
