Reflecting on May's goals, and setting Lunduke Journal goals for June.

Every month I set some goals for myself for The Lunduke Journal.

During May... I hit my goals for articles and for growing the subscriber base (both for free and paid subscribers). Feel pretty solid about all of it. And I wanted to fully launch the video portion of The Lunduke Journal. Feel good about that too.

The only goal that I haven't yet achieved is:

"Schedule and fund attending one conference."

But I'm SUPER close to hitting that goal. Got two conferences on the schedule, and am just short of funding the travel expenses. But, hey, there's an hour or two left in the month. Maybe one or two more Founding Members will join up and make it happen. šŸ˜ŽšŸ˜‰

Now, looking ahead to June, I have some very different goals in mind. Here they are.

1) Don't say the word "Subscriber" so much. 🤣

Because of the various goals I set for myself for May... I ended up needing to talk about subscriptions WAY TOO MUCH. lol! In June I'd like to use that word... almost never. Here and there is cool, but otherwise... no subscription pushes and drives. šŸ˜‰ In fact, I'm setting a firm limit: no articles or shows focusing on subscriptions. For the whole month.

2) Lots of games!

I've already talked about this a bit, but June is going to have a bunch of game stuff happening. During the month I want to add many games to the BBS (already in progress), and launch the Lunduke Journal Shell system with some games. And, hopefully, release Lunduke's Quest (though that one I won't give myself a hard time if I slips... getting that game right is a big deal for me, personally.)

3) Release my current book, and release a monthly Lunduke Journal PDF

I made very little progress on editing "Linux Sucks: The Book" during May. Time to make that a priority and get that work done (I'm terrible at editing... it's my Achilles heel). I'm also setting a goal for finally starting to publish a monthly PDF archive of Lunduke Journal articles published during a given month. Something I want to have for myself for archival purposes.

4) Live events!

Hold the second part of LundukeFest. Founding Member hangouts. Do more live streams in general. Keep moving on attending conferences.

So, there you go! Outside of the standard "write articles, record podcasts" regular weekly work, those are my high level goals for June! I like 'em. These feel good to me.

Now. Since May isn't over for another hour or two... and my "don't say subscribe so much" goal doesn't kick in until the clock strikes midnight...

Somebody go and become a Founding Member subscriber so I can meet that "Schedule and fund attending one conference" goal for May! 🤣

The futility of Ad-Blockers

Ads are filling the entirety of the Web -- websites, podcasts, YouTube videos, etc. -- at an increasing rate. Prices for those ad placements are plummeting. Consumers are desperate to use ad-blockers to make the web palatable. Google (and others) are desperate to break and block ad-blockers. All of which results in... more ads and lower pay for creators.

It's a fascinatingly annoying cycle. And there's only one viable way out of it.

openSUSE says "No Lunduke allowed!"

Those in power with openSUSE make it clear they will not allow me anywhere near anything related to the openSUSE project. Ever. For any reason.

Well, that settles that, then! Guess I won't be contributing to openSUSE! 🤣

Lunduke Journal Update: Nov 12, 2025

Just a few quick Lunduke Journal-y tidbits on this fine Wednesday afternoon!

  1. Two fascinating interviews this week: DHH and Preston Byrne (the attorney for 4chan). Both are worth catching if you haven’t already.

  2. The 50% off Subscriptions deal has been extended through this Friday (Nov 14th). So many of you kept picking up new subscriptions… I figured… what the heck! Why not keep the party going? So Monthly, Yearly, and Lifetime subs are all half off at least through Friday!

  3. The ā€œLifetime Subscriber Wallā€ isn’t part of today’s (November 12th) shows. There have been so many requests to be added to the wall this week that I need to update the design a bit to fit everybody. The Lifetime Wall will re-appear at the end of new shows tomorrow or Friday.

Once again, thank you for your support! None of this would be possible without you!

Lunduke taking Veteran's Day off

Today, we honor our veterans and their service to our nation.

Great men, like my grandfather who, during World War II, joined the Navy at 14 years old. He was a big, older-looking teenager… so, as was not unheard of, he lied about his age on the paperwork in order to go fight the Axis.

And his father, who joined in the year leading up to the start of World War I.

I am taking this Veteran’s Day off. In part to spend time helping my children learn about their family’s US military history (which goes back, on multiple lines, to the very beginning of our nation). And in part… to watch one of the greatest movies ever made, The Great Escape. Because, hey, Steve McQueen and James Garner! Pretty sure my Grandpa would approve.

Lunduke Journal shows will resume tomorrow (and I’ve got an awesome one lined up).

In the meantime, if you haven’t watched yesterday’s DHH interview yet, highly recommended. Watch (or listen) to it anywhere you like.

And, in the grand tradition of ā€œVeterans Day Salesā€, I’ve extended the 50% off all Lunduke Journal subscriptions discount through this coming Friday. Because I can. Pretty sure my Grandpa would approve of that too.

50% off Lunduke Journal subs extended through Nov 10th

Just a quick heads up:

The Lunduke Journal has a 50% off discount on all types of subscriptions — Monthly, Yearly, and The World Famous Lifetime Subscriptions (tm). And that discount has been extended through this coming Monday (November 10th).

Just for kicks.

All of the details are right here.

Or you can always go to Lunduke.com and click the fancy-shmancy ā€œ50% offā€ link.

Here’s a map on how to find that link.

Ā

Think of it like a treasure map. Only better. Because you don’t need to stand up and walk. Walking is hard.
