Finished watching the Hawkeye series on Disney+.

... and... I rather enjoyed it! (Not TOO many spoilers ahead... unless you count talking about the comic books from years back as spoilers...)

It wasn't yet another "We need to save the entire Universe!!!OMG!" storyline. Felt more human than most of the recent shows.

I'll be honest. I wasn't sure I was going to enjoy it after the first episode. At that point it could have gone a lot of different ways. But they really surprised me with how much I enjoyed it... especially the last episode.

And, bonus, I don't recall a single political-y or culture-war-y thing in the whole series. Being as they were introducing Kate Bishop (who, in the comics, was the most recent "not Clint Barton" person to be called Hawkeye), they could have gone down a number of roads that would have been simply annoying to watch. But they didn't! They handled it with class and heart and style. Impressed.

I'm not a huge fan of the Kate Bishop character in the comics. They created that character like 15 years back... and, honestly, her storylines stunk and the character was really blah in the comics. But the writing here in the TV show was 10x better than the comics (which usually isn't the case) and the actress did a bang up job. Made me actually rather like Bishop!

Sidenote: So glad they just skipped Wyatt (the other "Hawkeye" from the comics). Golden Archer / Black Archer (depending on how the writers were feeling at the moment) was just... not great. Didn't love the character. Or the stories. Or, heck, even the art. Never felt like real "Hawkeye" to me.

Oh oh oh!

And Jacques Duquesne! Totally blew me away when they introduced that character. Though they renamed him to "Jack" in the MCU. Which... is totally fine. I wasn't 100% sure I was going to like how the character was portrayed (either by the actor, or the writing... which changed some significant things about him from the classic comics)... but, in the end, I approve. It was an excellent way to introduce him and I really hope they bring him back.

Historical sidenote: Duquesne was one of the early villains that the Avengers faced off against in the 1960s. Then he stopped being a jerk and actually joined the Avengers in the 1970s. At least for a while. Then he was Cotati-ified (that was a fun story line... hope they bring that in with the Kree stuff)... then he became a villain again in the 80s. Then there was Chaos War, about a decade back, where they made him a key player. But that storyline was annoying. hehe. Anyway, long story short: Duquesne is fun in the comics and I want more of him in the MCU.

I think Hawkeye might be my favorite of the Disney+ MCU shows so far. Lightyears better than "Falcon and the Winter Soldier" (which, on further consideration, was a trainwreck and the worst thing out of the MCU... a major blunder in story telling). Better than WandaVision (which was a fun retelling of one of the darkest comic story lines I've ever read). And better than Loki (which, despite a few small complaints and continuity issues, was a fun little romp).

Good show. Recommended

The futility of Ad-Blockers

Ads are filling the entirety of the Web -- websites, podcasts, YouTube videos, etc. -- at an increasing rate. Prices for those ad placements are plummeting. Consumers are desperate to use ad-blockers to make the web palatable. Google (and others) are desperate to break and block ad-blockers. All of which results in... more ads and lower pay for creators.

It's a fascinatingly annoying cycle. And there's only one viable way out of it.

openSUSE says "No Lunduke allowed!"

Those in power with openSUSE make it clear they will not allow me anywhere near anything related to the openSUSE project. Ever. For any reason.

Well, that settles that, then! Guess I won't be contributing to openSUSE! 🤣

"Andreas Kling creator of Serenity OS & Ladybird Web Browser" - Lunduke’s Big Tech Show - September 13th, 2023 - Ep 044

My mother gave me some good advice one time; If you don't want to have to do something, don't ever learn how or let anybody know you know how to do it.

About 6 months ago, the A/V guy at my church left for a new position. Volunteers have managed to keep the show going but as things go bad, nobody knows how to fix it, so they just work around it.

Well, a few weeks ago, the computer running presenter wasn't working and I, without thinking, ran over, fixed the issue, got it all working in less than 1 minute. (Somebody had set it to present to the laptop screen instead of the projectors.)

Guess who has now been voluntold to take over the A/V for the church.

Anyways, the screen on the sound board has now gone bad. I tried to take a look but, WTH is this? I've seen crazy stuff like this but never in person. They smashed a COTS motherboard in this thing and ran the craziest adapters I've ever seen.
It still kind of works, as long as you know what each slider does and I think we're just going to ...

Retro-man: Origen Story

My building of systems and methodologies did not start the last couple years with the new tools we have. I have always been the marine who secures the beachhead - then prepared the way to land the Army. The story begins in 1984, on a Prime Mini-computer. Emacs was my editor. I think my fingers still have arthritis from the Emacs finger jujitsu.

My first job in IT was my freshman college summer. A roommate got me a gig with the US Geological Survey. 3 of us were hired. College interns were “free money”. I had only had 1 computer science class and had taught myself basic in high school on an Apple IIe.

I didn’t know Fortran so the other two got the Fortran work. I was given the Info database - on a Prime minicomputer. No training. No how-to books, just an alphabetical listing of the commands. No one else knew the product at our division.

So I would ask questions of the lead Info person in Washington DC. I annoyed her because she wasn’t in the business of training...

Admit it! You know you've done this before!

4th Wall Almost Full, $89 Lifetime Deal Ends Very Soon

Woo-hoo! The 4th Lunduke Journal Lifetime Subscriber Wall of Shame Awesomeness is almost full!

  • That means that, within the next day or two, the massively discounted Lifetime Subscriptions will go back to their normal price. So if you wanted to snag the $89 / $99 Lifetime Sub (instead of paying $300), now’s your last chance.

  • If you are already a Lifetime Subscriber and want to be added to the 4th (or the start of the 5th) wall, email me (bryan at lunduke.com). There are only a couple of spots left on Wall 4.

  • The new Lifetime Wall designs are locked and loaded, and will make their grand debut at the end of all new shows starting either Friday or Monday.

I also wanted to take a moment to thank all of the non-Lifetime Subscribers. The Lifetime Subs may get a little extra attention at the end of the shows… but every subscriber (Monthly & Yearly) helps to make this work possible.

All of you rule.

79 Million Views in 6 Months for The Lunduke Journal

Welcome to February, all of you amazing nerds!

January was a fun month for The Lunduke Journal (thanks to all of you). For those interested in a little Inside Baseball, I’ve pulled together some stats and charts below.

The short version: Great month. Crazy news stories. Solid growth. Can’t complain!

Revamped Lifetime Wall

Oh! And the “Lifetime Subscriber Wall” is getting a “retro” facelift.

This is what the four Lifetime Walls currently look like:

Once that 4th Wall is filled (a little over 75% of the way there as of this morning), I’ll be introducing the new designs (for all the walls) along with the starting of Wall Number 5.

Each Wall now has its own, distinct look and theme. Very Retro Computer-y. You’re going to dig it.

To make that “Wall Number 5” get here as fast as possible, I’ve gone ahead an reinstated the “$89 Lifetime Subscriber” deal. But only until Wall Number 4 is full.

Want to be on the Wall? If you don’t have a Lifetime Subscription, grab one. If you already have one, email me (bryan at lunduke.com) to let me know how you want your name to be displayed.

Once Wall 4 is full, the Super-Mega-Ultra Discounted Lifetime Subscription goes back to regular price. And, the next day, the new Lifetime Wall design appears at the end of new shows.

At the current rate, I expect that to happen in the next couple days.

Stats for January, 2026

Now let’s look at the stats for January.

Can’t lie. I’m pleased.

  • 30 new shows (just shy of one new show every day)

  • 15.2 Million views (including podcast downloads)

  • 2,326 new subscribers

The most popular story of January, 2026:

Taking a high level view: This means that, in the last 6 months (Aug ‘25 - Jan ‘26), The Lunduke Journal has had:

  • 79.4 Million views

  • 21,694 new subscribers

Bonkers, right?

Here’s a chart of “views” for last 6 months:

Image

The long-term trend continues to be solidly upward, with February (in the first 7 days, so far) currently tracking slightly ahead of January.

For those interested in the specific platforms: The Lunduke Journal is seeing the most growth on X and the Audio Podcast.

Here’s a combined subscriber chart for January (up 2,326 subscribers from the month prior):

Wild. It is truly amazing to me how widely these stories are spreading nowadays.

Over 15 million. In one month.

These are numbers that most of the big, “Main Stream” Tech Journalists could only dream of.

The reach of The Lunduke Journal, thanks to all of you, is now wildly exceeding any other publication I have ever worked with.

Even though most “Main Stream” Tech Journalists are refusing to cover some of the biggest stories in Tech… those stories are still getting out there.

They are being seen. Far and wide.

Thanks to all of you.

$89 Lifetime Offer Ends at Midnight!

I’ll make this quick: The $89 Lifetime Subscription offer for The Lunduke Journal ends at midnight tonight (Saturday, January 31st).

Once the calendar reads “February” — poof — the deal is gone.

If you wanted to save 70% on a Lifetime Subscription, these are your final hours.

A huge thank you to everyone who has signed up during this crazy deal. We are this close to filling up the 4th Lifetime Subscriber Wall (there’s a possibility it might fill up in the next few hours).

Far beyond anything I was expecting. All of you are absolutely amazing. The Lunduke Journal would not be possible without you.

If you were on contemplating grabbing that Lifetime Sub, I’d jump on it right now. The price goes back up to normal ($300) in about 12 hours or so.

Get it while it’s cheap!
