Fun bit of "personal tech news" (lol):
I finally get why people like "smart" TVs.
Recording TV shows is rad! 😆. Tonight, I watched the US Women's Olympic Team win a gold metal in an incredible comeback overtime victory over Canada! I am so "hopped up on hockey" (as my dad puts it 😆) right now that I wish I could hit the ice myself! Dang I miss playing, but now I'm getting off-topic. The game happened while I was working, which was a HUGE bummer. But my dad recorded it, and WOW... no ads, not even breaks between periods, just my hockey. Thanks to that random bit of tech (and obviously the awesome dude who used it for me), I got to see America win the gold. It was awesome! 🏒🥇🎉
A different kind of score
Now on to something more interesting to those of you who don't like sports puck. 😆 I think I'm about to inherit a nice little laptop.
It's old, but not retro: core i5 processor, 4 GB of RAM, a few USB ports, though I didn't see HDMI... unless one of the ports I thought was USB was actually HDMI (didn't look that closely, lol). It also has what I thought might be a floppy drive, but after looking at it I realized it must be a CD drive. My mom said it doesn't work (and I think it doesn't open), but if I can do something with it, nice to have another CD/DVD player. It has Windows 10 on it, but it's slow as a hockey puck on sand. Tonight, I took all my mom's files off of it, and put them on a flash drive (one of the ones I was talking about earlier this week). She asked me, "what should we do with the old one?" To which I answered, "Oh, I'll find a use for it." 😆
Now... I'm debating. When I told my best friend tonight, he laughed at the specs and said "Oh I know you're puttin' Linux on that!" 😆. And he's probably not wrong. I expect I will be putting Linux on it at some point. But first, my buddy showed me this "Windows de-bloater" script he found, and apparently he runs it on any laptop he works on (he's a serious Windows guy, like I used to be). I kinda want to run that on this old clunker and see if it makes a difference. If it doesn't help enough to make the computer more usable... Vendefoul Wolf? Mint? Open Mandriva? Devuan? I've been reading about so many cool new-ish distros on this site that I kinda like the idea of trying a few. I'm kinda not diggin' XUbuntu anymore since the whole "kernel panic!" fiasco (still gotta put a new OS on that too). On the other hand, a low-end Windows box would be kinda nice for testing. Or who knows, maybe I'll put FreeDOS on it - it might be old enough. 😆. Nah, probably not FreeDOS (getting files on/off it is a pain, plus I might need a browser if take it on the road. GhostBSD maybe? So many options, so little time...
But anyway, I'm gonna call it a night while that amazing USA hockey win is still fresh in my mind. Goodnight, ladies and geeks.
