The futility of Ad-Blockers

Ads are filling the entirety of the Web -- websites, podcasts, YouTube videos, etc. -- at an increasing rate. Prices for those ad placements are plummeting. Consumers are desperate to use ad-blockers to make the web palatable. Google (and others) are desperate to break and block ad-blockers. All of which results in... more ads and lower pay for creators.

It's a fascinatingly annoying cycle. And there's only one viable way out of it.

Apple Macbook Neo and Dad Math

I loved my Apple Macbook (nothing, not Air, not Pro). A tiny, ipad sized Macbook. I was traveling for work at the time and it was wonderful on a plane, in meetings etc. Run on battery, charge it at lunch, run the rest of the day on battery. It wasn't a powerhouse, but it didn't need to be.

Enter the new Neo, a 13" Macbook with an iPhone chip for $599! It's a perfect college laptop. I'd buy one in a heart beat if I was traveling again.

My daughter and grandkids moved back home and her "high school graduation" Macbook Air is 13 years old, no longer supported by Apple. So I thought of gifting her the new Neo.

Then Dad Math kicked in. What if I upgraded my M2 Air, 16gig ram, 1tb drive that is doing all I need it to do?

New M5 Air was just announced. So I spec'd a 32gig ram, 2tb version and went to my wife to regale her with my Dad Math justifications.

Guess who's getting a new M5 Air, runs llm's like 8x faster. Not that I'm running local LLMs, but they...

Retro Man Stories - Rewriting Boss’s Code

I don’t use retro tech in my modern life, but I did live through the era we all look back on fondly. Here is one such story.

I’m new on the job. First week my boss comes in “I’ve started this app, I want you to finish it”. I take a look and say, “I can rewrite it in an hour”.

Yeah. Really smart thing to say to your new boss. He’s labored on code, doesn’t want me to simply discard it like dog poo. “Don’t rewrite it, just finish it”.

An hour later I walk into his office - “Take a look, I completed the app”. Of course I had rewritten it and threw away hours of his work as dog poo. But, the app was finished, and far better than what he had put together.

“Alright Lee, we get it - AI makes you productive”. But no - this is a Retro Man story. This occurred in 1990ish. I was working in Foxbase (not even Foxpro) (dBase/Clipper/Foxbase). Was I some genius programmer? Yes, but that’s not how I rewrote the whole app from ...

The vintage website is starting to take shape. Now has page navigation. About page is mostly done, next up is a “What’s New” style change log and a “Web Journal” since blogging wasn’t a thing yet. Most of you said you wanted Win95/System 7 era compatibility so I made some changes and now that is what I’m aiming for at the moment. Currently testing compatibility in IE 2 and Netscape 2.

I’m having a ball with it. The Internet really was so fun back then when you could just sit down and do stuff like this without a CS degree. These changes aren’t online yet. I’ll probably upload them in the next day or two.

79 Million Views in 6 Months for The Lunduke Journal

Welcome to February, all of you amazing nerds!

January was a fun month for The Lunduke Journal (thanks to all of you). For those interested in a little Inside Baseball, I’ve pulled together some stats and charts below.

The short version: Great month. Crazy news stories. Solid growth. Can’t complain!

Revamped Lifetime Wall

Oh! And the “Lifetime Subscriber Wall” is getting a “retro” facelift.

This is what the four Lifetime Walls currently look like:

 

Once that 4th Wall is filled (a little over 75% of the way there as of this morning), I’ll be introducing the new designs (for all the walls) along with the starting of Wall Number 5.

Each Wall now has its own, distinct look and theme. Very Retro Computer-y. You’re going to dig it.

To make that “Wall Number 5” get here as fast as possible, I’ve gone ahead an reinstated the “$89 Lifetime Subscriber” deal. But only until Wall Number 4 is full.

Taking a high level view: This means that, in the last 6 months (Aug ‘25 - Jan ‘26), The Lunduke Journal has had:

  • 21,694 new subscribers

The long-term trend continues to be solidly upward, with February (in the first 7 days, so far) currently tracking slightly ahead of January.

For those interested in the specific platforms: The Lunduke Journal is seeing the most growth on X and the Audio Podcast.

Wild. It is truly amazing to me how widely these stories are spreading nowadays.

Over 15 million. In one month.

These are numbers that most of the big, “Main Stream” Tech Journalists could only dream of.

The reach of The Lunduke Journal, thanks to all of you, is now wildly exceeding any other publication I have ever worked with.

Even though most “Main Stream” Tech Journalists are refusing to cover some of the biggest stories in Tech… those stories are still getting out there.

They are being seen. Far and wide.
