What would I do with a FreeDOS fork?
Thinking out loud here. :)
So. What would I do with a fully forked version of FreeDOS?
== Standardize Included Dev Tools
First I'd probably select a subset of compilers, IDEs, and dev tools to include, by default, on all installations.
Off the top of my head: Free Pascal and FreeBASIC are both musts. Maybe DJGPP as well. A few other fun possibilities.
== Standardize on some Productivity Software
Also select a minimum set of (distributable) productivity software and utilities. Editors and the like. Basically seek to make it a powerful system out of the box.
== Build stuff for fun
There are a few utilities and tools I'd like to build just for me... including a calendaring/task app, word processor, simple graphics editor for me making comic strips, that sort of thing. Stuff to make my life easier and more fun.
As those are built, include 'em!
== Games!
Include a few good distributable games. Include new games as they get built just for fun.
Basically this would be a fun playground. No real interest in actively supporting people who run into issues... interested in building it for me and people like me. ;)
Luckily the FreeDOS team has done a fantastic job on the core system. It requires no changes to the kernel as MS-DOS compatibility is near 100%.
The more I think on this... the more fun it sounds. Might need to toy around with putting something like this together. See what the right approach is.
