A Smalltalk SmartPhone: The "SqueakPhone"

An alternate universe of what a smartphone OS could be like.

Not iOS. Not Android. Not even your various flavors of Linux phone. This is something totally different. A Smalltalk-based phone with roots in the Xerox Alto of the 1970s.

And it works.

Note: I misspelled “SqueakPhone” in the first slide. Because spelling is hard.

Firefox version 107: The most boring Firefox... ever.

The latest version of Firefox could be, quite possibly, their most boring release they've ever had. Especially considering how ridiculous and amusing their previous version was.

Ode to Msft Office 365.

There was a time when, like so many, I thought office was over priced. I made my kids use open office as it was free. They HATED it.

Anywho….flash forward and office is actually a good value, IMHO.

It’s recently brought me joy by adding the ability to have multiple accounts in teams and OneNote, A source of annoyance was working on a client engagement and THEY use Office365 so I couldn’t be simultaneously on my employer teams and the client teams. It’s nice that there is an excellent web interface. But I prefer the apps.

Now, in the morning at 6:30am, I can attend a teams call from my phone - in my bed…instead of having to use the client laptop.

Another “new” (to me) niceness is that Visio is included in Office365. I never use Visio enough to warrant purchasing it. I do prefer LucidChart, but when Visio is free and available, it’s nice.

I like slack and Teams both. However, the integration of teams into office is a very nice plus.

I discovered a ...

Upcoming events at The Lunduke Journal!

We've got some fun events happening over the next few weeks, here at The Lunduke Journal!

Saturday, December 3rd, 2022 @ 12pm Eastern - Founding Member Hangout.  An email will be sent out before we get started with the link for the video chat. (This is only for Founding Member level subscribers.)

December 7th through December 14th, 2022 - PDA Week!  We will be immersing ourselves in all things Personal Digital Assistant.  Palm, Newton, Psion, WinCE, DOS, Maemo, Zaurus, the works.

January 4th through January 11th, 2023 - 8 Bit Week!  Apple II, Atari 8-bit, Commodore 64... if it's a computer, and it's 8 Bit, this will be its week to shine!

In addition, we'll also be putting on the "macOS Sucks" live show during December!  This had to be postponed due to a rather nasty round of Strep Throat.  Now that I'm back to full speed, we'll be finding the perfect date for this on the calendar.  It's a little tricky during December, what with all the holidays and all, but we'll find a good spot for it!  Announcement on that soon!

To take full advantage of the PDA and 8 Bit themed weeks, you'll want to make sure you have an account over on Lunduke.Locals.com.  That's, essentially, the social media / forum for The Lunduke Journal community.

For more details on the different subscription levels -- and all their perks -- see the "How to Subscribe to The Lunduke Journal" page on Substack.

Once again, a huge thank you to all of you amazing subscribers to The Lunduke Journal. You make all of this possible — without a single drop of money from Big Tech. Pretty cool.

Lunduke Journal weekend scheduling changes

Got a two quick Lunduke Journal notes for everyone:

  1. Lunduke has come down with a case of Strep Throat and his voice is shot. Since he can’t really speak, the Friday and Saturday shows this week have been moved to next week (November 18th and 19th). That includes “macOS Sucks”. Additional scheduling details (including URLs for live-streaming) will be sent out to all Lunduke Journal subscribers in the coming days.

  2. Starting at midnight tonight (Friday), The Lunduke Journal will not be offering any new Lifetime Subscriptions. Existing Lifetime Subscriptions (including any that people pick up before midnight tonight) will, obviously, be honored. For life (hence the name). For more details, see this post on Lunduke.Locals.com from earlier in the week.

Sorry for the change, everyone.  My throat is just not up for an hour long show today... and I'm highly doubtful my voice will sound even remotely normal by tomorrow at this time.  So a reschedule had to happen.

That is all.
