Happy New Year, you crazy nerds!

A few quick notes to kick off the first week of the new year:

1) Both of the Pixel art, comic strip characters have been claimed! That went fast! Quite a few of you were interested in getting immortalized as a pixel art character. Sorry I couldn't do it for more of you -- but I only needed two new characters at this exact moment. There's a high likelihood that I'll do this again soon as I flesh out my comic strip world -- and, if I do, I'll find a way to include existing subscribers as well (not just new subscribers).

2) All the subscription prices are now going up to match inflation. It's not a huge bump, just enough to keep up with things. I haven't set the new price everywhere yet -- so if you sneak in before I get around to making all of the changes in the morning... I won't tell anyone. ;) (I'm too sleepy to do it all tonight after New Years Eve.) But by 8 or 9am (give or take) all the new prices will be in place.

3) I know some of you thought it would be funny if I kicked off a big sale on New Years Day. Sorry to disappoint ya. No sale. Not doing sales anymore. ;)

4) Wednesday, at noon Central Time, is the first regular live chat show. It'll be on-demand for those who can't make the live recording. Really looking forward to the show -- going to be a good time!

5) I swear I had a fifth thing to mention. But I'm tired. Did I say Happy New Year, yet?

The futility of Ad-Blockers

Ads are filling the entirety of the Web -- websites, podcasts, YouTube videos, etc. -- at an increasing rate. Prices for those ad placements are plummeting. Consumers are desperate to use ad-blockers to make the web palatable. Google (and others) are desperate to break and block ad-blockers. All of which results in... more ads and lower pay for creators.

It's a fascinatingly annoying cycle. And there's only one viable way out of it.

openSUSE says "No Lunduke allowed!"

Those in power with openSUSE make it clear they will not allow me anywhere near anything related to the openSUSE project. Ever. For any reason.

Well, that settles that, then! Guess I won't be contributing to openSUSE! 🤣

Lunduke taking Veteran's Day off

Today, we honor our veterans and their service to our nation.

Great men, like my grandfather who, during World War II, joined the Navy at 14 years old. He was a big, older-looking teenager… so, as was not unheard of, he lied about his age on the paperwork in order to go fight the Axis.

And his father, who joined in the year leading up to the start of World War I.

I am taking this Veteran’s Day off. In part to spend time helping my children learn about their family’s US military history (which goes back, on multiple lines, to the very beginning of our nation). And in part… to watch one of the greatest movies ever made, The Great Escape. Because, hey, Steve McQueen and James Garner! Pretty sure my Grandpa would approve.

Lunduke Journal shows will resume tomorrow (and I’ve got an awesome one lined up).

In the meantime, if you haven’t watched yesterday’s DHH interview yet, highly recommended. Watch (or listen) to it anywhere you like.

And, in the grand tradition of “Veterans Day Sales”, I’ve extended the 50% off all Lunduke Journal subscriptions discount through this coming Friday. Because I can. Pretty sure my Grandpa would approve of that too.
